We might give a chuckle and brush this question off the table because we remember the player Grant Williams was (started off his career missing his first 25 three point attempts, and looked lost in his second season). But when we watch GWill now and foresee the player he could become, then this question is taken more seriously.
Can Grant Williams replace Al Horford when Al's time is up?
Grant is a high IQ guy, who can switch on defense and compliment the offense, and makes lots of winning plays. He did well against reigning MVP Nikola Jokic the other night, which only makes us wonder what he can do against Embiid, Giannis and Bam.
His lack of height might be the issue, though.

I think G-Will is def gonna be a part of the rotation for the next several years, but i do think we need to look at using Al's contract to get another near all-star caliber forward on this team. Preferably a freak of nature defender that can guard Giannis and KD. I've been trumpeting the idea of boston gambling on Jonathan Isaac's health for a while now. If healthy (big if) he'd add another freak athlete and defender to this squad. He also can finish at the hoop and has the beginnings of an average 3 pt shot.

Yeah, I'm ok with Isaac too. But I prefer more beef / muscle. That's why I like GWill. Strong and mobile, and sturdy at the point of attack.

I think GWill may eventually become a good defender against giannis, but KD scares me. KD could shoot over him alllll day. And I think KD still may have 3-4 years of upper echelon play left in him. Someone like Isaac has the length to challenge him.

So, a question: Has ANYONE really ever stopped KD? Maybe Kawhi slowed him down some? Just asking.
I know this is all just fun speculation, but I want to see how this group looks in the playoffs before I decide I want to move on from Al. He's looked so youthful and energetic this year, that maybe he has a few more good years left in him, and if he does, maybe it's best to just stand pat with him. Guys with his well-rounded skill set are few and far between.
Grant has come a long way, but I still don't see him as big enough to take Al's spot against the bigger teams in the league.

Our schedule the rest of the way is brutal -- but that's a good thing.
We play UTA, MIN, TOR, MIA, and we finish with CHI, MIL, and MEM. All these are playoff teams, and possible title contenders (MIA, MIL, MEM).
This is good because it will reveal our true mettle -- are we a contender or a pretender, where is the chink in our armor?
This will be the time to test GWill's mettle -- will he shine, shrink or remain the same?
If he shines, I think that bodes well for him to be Horford's eventual reolacement (JMost, I agree, maybe Al can stick around a couple more years).

I absolutely see Grant Williams as the Horford replacement. In a way he sorta has to be. Also GWill isn't the KD/Giannis neutralizer. Tatum is. GWill was 2 time SEC player of the year and a consensus all American. I don't think he was expected to be this good. But he is now.
I think his possible ceiling now is sorta peak Draymond Green

Stop being a homer, E 😁
He's better than Draymond -- he's Batman!

One thing I love about GWill is how dang strong he is. Bigger players bounce off him in the paint.
