Got 1 title and probably should have gotten a 2nd or a 3rd but wasn't enough. Especially with the Lakers and Kobe in his prime. Tatum is still 23 years old so we have time. Marcus and Jaylen are locked up for the next 5 years and 3 years respectively. My argument is this. Even if we trade Marcus, and Horford for Schroder and unload them for crap contracts and picks. And deal Jaylen ultimately for someone good. Are the players we'd be getting back necessarily better at their positions then they would be? Wililiams is still growing. Jaylen is about to reach his potential. Smart is getting a chance to run the point. Unless some team is going to hand us Bradley Beal and Deandre Ayton in a 3 year span. Plus we get a better pg and wing.
This is basically what Ainge accomplished by dealing off antoine. He was able to draft Jefferson and parlay a top pick into Ray and then deal Jefferson for KG. He was also able to draft Rondo and Perkins late. He got Williams recently but hasn't had the same luck of late.
He knew Mchale and the Suns aren't going to necessarily just hand us Ayton for Jaylen Brown as we deal for Beal somehow this time.
Tatum is 23 years old. We do have that and like a 3 or 4 year window until he hits his prime. That also doesn't mean Smart needs to be dealt right this second either. We aren't gaining cap space. The cap goes up every year which will give us additional flexibility but it's probably going to be done through trades.
Beal is available pretty soon. Bam is going to be there probably at some point. Sabonis too. Ayton down the road. There are other younger guards we can target in a few years. It really could be anyone for all we know at this point.
Mike Conley is not a better option than Smart. He's similar. These other wings being thrown around aren't better than Jaylen either. There are a select few players who actually are better than them. It would also have to be something like that where we are getting Beal or Devin Booker and Sabonis or Ayton plus a player like Rondo was for us somehow. We have Williams who can be Perk in a few years
We'd basically have to turn Smart, Jaylen, Horford, and Shroder into that somehow. Smart kind of already is Rondo. Jaylen has potential to similar to Beal or Booker. A missed 3 or turnover here or there. We'd have to parlay Smart, Jaylen, Horford and Schroder into Ayton, Beal, Conley or something similar somehow. Is it really an upgrade? Vs just getting a better 4? I get we might not be able to do that as it stands.
We'd also need to parlay our late 1st and 2nds the next 3 years which we have been loading up on 2nd round picks into better players than Nesmith, Pritchard and Romeo. They are still developing. We already have mid to late first rounders, and a bunch of 2nd round picks. SO we should be able to do that anyways. We had guys like Baby and Powe before.
I get Ainge did all this and it worked once. He could have just stood pat and drafted Giannis and Donic once Pierce retired. Is Conley really better than Smart though? Is Booker really better than Jaylen? I think it's negligable. We need a 4. We hav Al Horford as it stands. And better scoring off our bench. Pritchard, Nesmitha dn Romeo aren't really cutting it.
