Is if it equals significant value in return. Like I said in other threads the Celtics maneuvered under the luxury tax so they want to make deals. Trading Horford and Schroder basically gets us to the soft/hard cap. Trading Smart would be an additional 20 million dollars. The Celtics are not going to throw away that 30 million dollars that equals Horford and Shroders contracts. If they can trade them they probably would. Throwing Smart into the deal basically means gettings 2 impact players back for those 3.
Right now our core is basically
Smart
Jaylen
Tatum
Williams
Smart is basically in his prime or close to it but hasn't had a chance to play pg and really lead this team to this point. He's been more a jack of all trades guard and known for his defense and hustle. We have Horford. We have Shroder. It's debateable whether we need a 4 or not but I don't think the Celtics want to just throw away Horford or Schroder either or lose that money. They are eligible to be resigned. Or signed and traded as well as it stands.
Horford and Schroder's contract's expiring basically does nothing for us unless we can get even further under the tax line where we actually get under the cap to sign a free agent. Every other player outside of Jrich is on a rookie deal. We really don't have any room to maneuver. Jrich's contract keeps us over the cap and so does Horford for the next year. Jabari and Fernando are basically on league minimum contracts. Kanter can be moved.
We can take back mroe money by trading depending on whatever trade exceptions we have left and we can go over the tax line just by making deals. So it would seem l ike the Celtics want to make them. I still don't see the Celtics necessarily moving Smart though the only reason they would is if they are gettting 2 players back on his level or getting something that gives us a ton of flexibility going forward.. Plus Horford and/or Shroder. The same goes for Jaylen too even though his contract is even larger. We'd want a max player back if we deal him.
Those things are all easier said than done. We have to take back contracts in deals plus actuallly be able to acquire talent. It would have to be something really good like 2 players like him or something that gives us a ton of flexibilliy.
I just don't see it hapenning. I think it's more likely the celtics figure out a way to add a player and gain flexibility somewhere else. Through Horford or Shroder or a guy like Kanter and dumping Jabari and Fernando or one of our young players. I think they will keep the core intact for another year at least and probably really commit to it.
The only way we are trading these other guys is if it equals Beal or something crazy. We aren't trading him for crap or to get under the salary cap so we can sign a free agent. It would have to be something really good or that gives us a ton of flexibility going forward.
For basketball reasons too. The celtics can get a piece another way and add to their bench as well. Smart, Brown, Tatum, Williams it's negligible whether we can really do better at those positions. We have Horford and Schroder as it stands. Do we have to trade Smart to get anything back of value in return for those guys? Maybe but it has to something really good. Players are going to improve too. Why development on this team this year is so important. You have to gauge all that.
