This is usually the complete opposite of a move I would make.
1. It's a rumor from Yahoo first and foremost and they are saying Cleveland has Schroder as their [HASH]1 target. Not the Markhanen part. The Markhanen part I just came up with. a. Yahoo is 90 wrong 90 percent of the time. And I wouldn't believe this on both fronts that he is their [HASH]1 target or that this means they will trade for him. 2. Laurie Markhanen is not a player that has ever interested me overly. a. I know some people have thrown his name around for a while now. b. I am not one of them. His upside is limited. He was overhyped early on and he's about as unexciting a player we could get on the surface. He's not a very good passer or does anything that overly stands out. Except he's white and fairly athletic for a white guy and can shoot and score in a variety of ways. 3. His salary appears to be an albatross but is not terrible a. He's on one of those 4 year 70 something million dollar deals comparable to smart
Reasons I would consider this.
1. Cleveland just got a 9 million dollar exception because of the Rubio injury. 2. They want Schroder supposedly and this I can believe somewhat so they would maybe be willing to give up something 3. They could potentially take back a lot of salary if we take on Markhanen from them. 4. He'd add to that mix of younger talented players 5. He's a 4 and can score as a 3rd piece to go with Tatum and Jaylen 6. He seems like a player Brad Stevens would like for some reason where I am missing it. He is fairly athletic for a white guy and can shoot and fits that long mold that can shoot they like. 7. He's signed long term. So we'd have him for a while.
So if we can unload a lot of salary IE have them take Horford and Shroder for him I would consider this. The issue is we are then without a back up pg so we would have to get someone back and a 3rd team would need to be included. I don't think cleveland would give us anything back unless they want to deal us one of their key pieces like Okoro which I highly doubt. oTher than that I think it's terrible and he's about as mediocre a player as it gets. He's currently injured but x-rays are negative but looks like he might be out a bit but by the deadline might be healthy.

We'd basically be losing Horford and Schroder for this year and have Markhanen and a ton of cap space suddenly to either make other deals or go into free agency this offseason. He fits that basically perfectly.
He's signed long term. This is I don't mind if he's a player we want and I'm missing it somewhere. I get he is surprisingly athletic sometimes and can shoot and efficient. Not a good passer. We'd have one of the worst passing front courts and lose Horford's rebounding and all around nice game.
Mchale was a black hole inside. Parish wasn't that great a passer. It was Bird mostly. Does this team need good passers or is it a system thing? Williams can still improve there. Smart is improving. Tatum and Jaylen are improving. IT depends how much you value passing stats and Horfords all around good game like I said.
There is a chance he is a late bloomer and is the next porzingis except healthier. He can block shots and score in a variety of ways. I haven't been watching him a ton. He may be one of those guys who is improving slowly every year and fits perfectly. He's a 7 footer. Those are rare. Especially ones who can play.
So if both those things are true then yes I make this deal.

I think a lot of people overhyped him as a [HASH]1 scoring option and I lost interest and haven't watched him. He is actually a good passer but his stats don't show it. He looks like a developing Porzingis but healthier and more mobile. Would cleveland trade him to us? I don't know. But if Shroder is their [HASH]1 target and they want Horford's experience for a run they might. These trades still seem far fetched to me because GM's are not this stupid. If Markanhen really is a star they should know this. He appears to be improving each season as far as his assortment of moves and playing more under control.
Kevin Love is the other guy on their team and is signed for 2 more years so I don't think we want him.
Markanhen after looking at him for 5 seconds looks like a potential steal and GM's can't be that unaware. SO it actually checks all those boxes of a deal I would make yes.
If we deal for Markkanen and you have always been a fan. You can thank me later for making it happen. I still think it's far fetched is the thing but these are the types of moves we need to make or players we need to sign this offseason this time. Unless we are getting the Bradley beals of the world and trading off Jaylen Brown. And we need to clear cap to do that. He's been paying off for the cavs so they must be aware.
The celtics may ultimately have to go the bradley beal route and trade Jaylen brown. But these are the types of moves we should have been making. Not Kemba and Hayward. I get we haven't had cap space the last 3 or 4 years because of those guys. Sabonis Beal I'd still grade better than Kemba nd Hayward. Tatum, Brown in their prime and guys like this doing the same I'd rate better too.
This team as it stands appears to be one step ahead or one step behind because of how Ainge built it where we are missing pieces. There has been an influx of talent coming into the league the last several years and it takes time for those players to develop. So we are either going to go the Beal route or something like this ultimately. So far we have missed out. But that doesn't mean we trade our core.

Tatum is basically in that tier of Dirk NOwitski I would say once he hits his prime. Dirk was able to win with a very good team around him. We are basically missing a 4 as it stands. And other pieces. I'm guessing Cleveland wants Marcus Smart or some team does but I don't necessarily deal him. We still need other pieces. Doncic isn't able to do it just Porzingis. And Dallas is a trade partner too. But I think these deals are on hold for now. But the fact Cleveland and Dallas keeps popping up is telling.
Markkanen could end up an injury prone player too but that doesn't really concern me that much. I think the celtics need to stick to their guns and try to find players like this. Dirk had 3 ex allstars playing with him. We need to be ahead of the curve there. We have williams and Jaylen. We have Smart. We basically are missing a 4. Williams and Smart are basically defensive players. Smart can play point but he needs players to hit shots.
I think it was basically Jkidd, Marion, Dirk, Jason Terry and Chandler that won a title. Whether we trade for a pg or not Smart, Jaylen, Tatum, Markkanen and Williams would be similar. I just don't think GM's are that silly to give us a player like that. They signed Markkanen to that deal for a reason.

Only reason to trade Smart if it equals something like this and clearing cap or another team where we get a pg back.

Tatum could be like Dirk...but Dirk wasn't forcing 3s like Tatum is.
8x 3pointers a game is excessive.
Dirk has a great shooting touch and height, yet he knew he could get his team surer points from closer to the hoop and the post. And his scoring came naturally through the flow of the game rather than being forced by iso at the top of the key. Which meant he also had less turnovers and jeopardized his team less.
Its about playing smart mature basketball instead of stat chasing.
I do hope Tatum gets to Dirk's tier one day..because right now he is playing like a slightly better version of Rashard Lewis.
