To your point before though about why are we blowing leads. Basketball is tough now. Because it's become such an individual sport as much as anything. Guys liek Durant and Steph are amazingly refined individual players but it's not necessarily about just winning and ball movement and finding the open guy where guys get their stats that way. Players like Lebron and Westbrick and Harden have made it that way where they need to be the guys making the pass or scoring the ball. The league has become like that too where players just don't play that way and are inexperienced these young players so when they get to the playoffs the lebron's win. It's changing somewhat but not really. Now it's Giannis and he has a good team around him who play a good style. The bucks are more a throwback team but they aren't the celtics of old or anything.
Young players get thrown off their games if they don't have the ball. It was like i was saying in the fantasy league. Fox is good if he is the [HASH]1 guy but now Barnes is good and fox suddenly can't shoot. The team play is not quite there yet. And teams change so much it's hard to get there. I see spurts and moments of it. But for every stride they make then it's a different team the next year.
The Celtics have lost their edge in that regard. They have always had top talent. They might not be there quite yet either. But it's just difficult to play celtics basketball the way the league is now. Golden State was a dynasty that way but even they weren't able to run off championships like the Bulls were able to or the celtics or old school lakers or whoever.
For better or worse. It's an individual game more so and team play suffers and sometimes individual games suffer too. I get why it's become that way. It's like football too. Tom Brady is really more of a throw back where he's not doing antyhign that special. He is and is talented enought o do so but he's finding the open man,and that west coast offense they are running or expansion of it, someone is always open vs a guy like Mahomes who gets a ton of hype but is scrambling around and not executing as well. He's getting better too though.
Tom Brady is a ball hog in his own right but it's like apples and oranges. Team play suffers sometimes. Players like Tatum are trying to expand their individual games. Steph and Durant are really refined individual players but aren't necessalily the greatest team players in the world themselves. They are just very good refined individual players.
Even the Celtics in the 80's would coast and get bored against bad teams for 3 and a half quarters but the difference was they were so good tehy would turn it up in the final 5 minutes. These celtics are the opposite sometimes.
These players now are more geared towards fantasy sports and video games not real basketball. And even then their percentages and it's not even about the stat. It's how they get that stat. There are some very refined individual players out there who still aren't the greatest team players in the world. It's the same reason why team usa is not what it once was and foreign teams catch them off guard. They are making millions regardless and sometimes individual play suffers too. They get that stability to grow and some do and some don't. Other players don't get a shot etc, etc.
The wizards are proving that right now. Dinwiddie is a guy who is like that were he's just a good player if given a shot. I'm not sure if it will last but they are on fire right now. Style of play is just as important sometimes as talent. Knowing when to do what. Pushing the tempo and sharing the ball etc, etc.. THe 80's celtics and Lakers were really the height of basketball imo because it was both. They had talent and amazingly talented individual players and they also played a certain style and together.
