At some point, if it becomes clear that we do better with Schroder running the Point, do you think Udoka will make the change and relegate Smart to a different role? Maybe backup Point, or as a 2?
Smart does bring winning plays, especially at the end of games, so he'll still be a key contributor. But maybe lessen his role and make him a Special Teams player.

Too early to tell. We'd be missing a playmaker off the bench. Our starting lineup has both Jays actually doing much better creating plays for their teammates this year. So keeping DS on the bench gives us continuity.

When both have been on the floor, it seems that DS acts as the PG more of the time, which is appropriate since he's a PG and Smart is not. I think if they both close the game DS plays point. Stick Smart in the left corner where he's actually a good shooter and limit his opportunities to take bad shots. That said, for most of the game I think we need DS on the second unit to generate offense. Guys like Romeo, Nesmith, and GWill all are better when someone else creates the shot for them. Even Pritch to some extent. So I think we need DS there.
I can't help wondering what our plan for Schroder is longterm. It seems extremely unlikely that we can resign him after this year as we are limited to offering him way less than he will almost certainly be offered by someone else. So why wouldn't we trade him to someone looking to put themselves over the top? Maybe we can get something decent for him. I really think he'll be gone by the trade deadline, at which point either Pritch or Richardson will get his minutes.

Good points.
Long term I don't know if we'll pay DS what he'll be seeking and what he's worth. It'll be a very hard decision if we make it all the way to the Conference Finals and DS is a vital part of our success.

I don't think it's as much WILL we pay as CAN we pay under NBA salary rules.

I don't think it's as much WILL we play as CAN we pay under NBA salary rules. That becomes the key decision based on how guys play this year. If DS is the guy who helps us function better as a team, then Smart is the guy who move to make cap space. There is also going to be room to clear cap space with guys like Josh Richardson IF our other younger players step up e.g. Romeo, Nesmith

Well, once again DS is contributing on offense, while Smart isn't.

based on his past, this is the most polarizing signing for team. not the smart brown/tatum stuff.
