Though we’ll be making deep playoff runs the next 2-3 years, the underlying mission in the meantime is laying the foundation for a future contending squad — and it’s taking form as we speak.
The centerpieces of course are Tatum and Brown.
But you don’t win without a good and deep supporting cast. And we’re stocking those pieces nicely.
Take a look at Miami and their supporting cast — around Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo they have Duncan Robinson and Tyler Herro, Kendrick Nunn and Leonard Myers and Kelly Okynyk and Goran Dragic. Not exactly world beaters, but they go out and get the job done by playing their roles well.
Same with Milwaukee — around Giannis and Middleton they had a supporting cast who fit in so well with their system. Not many chinks in their armour. That’s what contending teams need.
After years of drafting players who ended up being wasted picks (Yabu, RJ Hunter, James Young, Ante Zizic, Sullinger, Fab Melo, etc), we have drafted much better by going after players with higher floors (though not necessarily high ceilings). Players who are likely to solidify roster spots instead of flaming out.
Our two higher ceiling young ones are Robert Williams and Romeo Langford — both who have potential to be more than just role players. But the rest of the young ones — Grant Williams, Payton Pritchard and Aaron Nesmith (and maybe Carsen and Tremont, but I’m not as optomistic)— are the blue collar players who punch in, do their work, and go home with the satisfaction of having done their job well.
Executing is the name of the game, and that’s the team we’re shaping up to be. Finally we are stocking up on guys who can actually shoot the ball well. It’ll make a significant impact.
Enjoy the ride folks.
