We have too many duplicate players on the back half of the roster, that limits our flexibility. Time we trim off the fat.
Marcus Smart and Brad Wanamaker — backup PG/SG: keep one, drop the other
Grant Williams and Semi Ojeleye — defensive muscle guys who shoot three’s: keep one, drop the other
Romeo Langford and Javonte Green — athletic wings who defend and provide some scoring: keep one, drop the other.
We can save three roster spots right there, and I’m sure we won’t be hurt much for losing them.

I'd cut Poirier. I think he's too slow for the modern NBA game. I'd only keep Tacko is it's on a two-way contract with the Red Claws.
Wanamaker was solid for us all year. Depending on whether we draft a PG, I'd consider resigning him at the right price. Just not sure that Waters is ready for the backup role.
Semi seems redundant. His 3 point shooting seemed to really improve late in the season, but not as much as Grant's. He'd probably bring back something in a trade though.
We haven't seen enough of Romeo to really know what we have. My main question with him is, is he fragile? Will he ever be able to stay healthy? Javonte doesn't have that problem, is a top 1% athlete, and has impressed me more often than not when he gets minutes, but is 8 years older. If I had to pick, I'd keep Romeo, but I'd rather keep both. Jettison Carson Edwards instead.

Forgot to include Robert Williams and Vincent Poirier — defensive bigs with lob potential: keep one, drop the other (thanks, Jmost).
Wanamaker is ok, but when Smart is olaying his role off the bench, Wanamaker becomes less utilized. He might be a later cut.
Reason for this thread is because I’d rather have roster spots open so we can draft players who have a chance to have more future impact with this team.

Javonte and Poirier can def go. I think Semi is worth keeping cuz he does a fine job guarding Giannis, and he's still cheap. But after his contract expires, let him go find his riches elsewhere. I don't want to overpay pay for brad, but i think he does serve a purpose. if we let him go we def need another trustworthy PG in this draft. I also wouldnt mind seeing Carson Edwards flipped in any deal we make. I dont think he'll ever be much of a pro. I hope im wrong.
I also wouldn't cry if we included Romeo in a trade. I think he has upside, but i dont think he's gonna be amazing. It's a shame Sacto couldn't have lost a few more games and we could've picked in front of Miami and got Herro. Danny wanted him, and he'd be a great fit on this team.

Too many under 6’4” combo guard types: Kemba, Smart, Wanamaker, Tremont and Pritchard.
Gotta trim the fat.

Wanamaker's a free agent. Drafting Pritchard (and Yam Madar) means Wanamaker won't be back, IMO.
Carson Edwards is history. 20 years from now he'll be the answer to a question about great summer league one quarter performances.
I think Tremont will get a chance to run the second unit in pre-season.
I'm guessing Poirier won't be back. He's on record as wanting to play and I don't see that happening in Boston.
Javonte and Semi are on the bubble.

This is just me but I'm noticing Hayward has opted out. So that's one roster spot. Javonte Green is at the end of the bench and his salary is non guaranteed so that's the other roster spot. I think the next logical drop is Semi. He's very cheap but it's a team option and he's very redundant now. Vincent Poirier has a guaranteed contract, but it's only 2 mill so we can cut him if needs be. Another interesting character is Brad Wannamaker. He is 31 years old and his contract is done. And we just drafted two young guys at his position and have two other young guys essentially in the pipeline with Tremont and Carsen Edwards. Carsen, in particular has a guaranteed contract.
So there are a lot of guys that could be gone and only two we're bringing in. I think Semi could bring in SOMETHING in a trade and maybe Grant W could also, but I think Semi is closer to his peak.
This leaves space to bring in the MLE and I think maybe whatever the minimum contract or the LLE is or something like that and it doesn't count against the cap.
So basically I agree with Derren. Plenty of opportunities to cut the lower half of the roster and bring in other guys and youth.
A guy I really think needs to be elevated is Tacko. We can offer him the two way again, but if he says no I think you have to try to do a minimum or something like that. You just cannot teach what he has and we're in a bit of a desperate situation after seeing what Bam A did to us lately.

Vincent Poirier has been traded to OKC for a future second rounder (Ainge is sure going after these 2nd rounders).
That at least tells us we think higher of Robert Williams than Poirier.

Handwriting was on the wall for Poirier. When I read we had made a trade with OKC I was really hoping we were getting Adams. Oh well.
Waters and Tacko got qualifying offers. I still think Tacko is too slow, but he did make some progress last year, so we'll see.

That is incredible. He showed almost nothing last year, yet Ainge gained a roster spot, dropped over 2mill from the salary cap, AND got a 2nd for it? Unreal. Unreal.

Oh wait. We also had to send money. And it's a conditional 2nd rounder. Yeah, that makes more sense. But we get a 2.5mill trade exception. Ok. Maybe that will matter.

Kanter picked up his option, so he's back for another year.

Wanamaker's a free agent. Carson Edwards is history. 20 years from now he'll be the answer to a question about great summer league one quarter performances. Thinking back to last year’s draft, I should have been more careful with my endorsement of Carsen Edwards. Sure he can get hot and drain 8 three’s in a game, but he’s susceptible to dry spells too. His movement is herky jerky and violent. There’s a difference between Carsen and Pritchard, and I feel better about Pritchard’s prospect than Carsen’s. Pritchard is a legit PG, able to handle dribbling duties and initiate the offense. Not Carsen. Pritchard is able to comfortably navigate through a defense and still keep his dribble. Not Carsen. Pritchard looks controlled when pulling up for his shot. Not Carsen (not as much).

I never thought of Carsen (I usually spell that wrong) as a PG anyway. More of a SG in a PG body. I think it's Nesmith that makes Edwards redundant. But either way ...

Don’t know how much longer it’ll take, but it’s time to move on from Semi Ojeleye.
He’s too limited, and we need guys who can come in and contribute in various ways.
