Lots of fans were disappointed that Ainge didn’t pull the trigger at the deadline (though he did try). Seems Bertans was a target, as his 3pt marksmenship would have been useful off the bench.
But even without any moves, this team can conceivably improve its playoff chances from within:
- Jayson Tatum is starting to play with swagger, and putting the team on his shoulders when we need it. He may not be a big time All-Star yet, but he’s definitely entered into the building. The time for Tatum to take over is quickly coming. Playoff time is when the red cape may come out.
- We’re getting Robert Williams back. He hasn’t played in 2 months, and I think we forgot the value he added to this team. For sure he’ll be rusty when he returns, but he’s an electric athlete who has a natural feel for blocking shots and slamming lob passes — he shouldn’t miss a beat with these. His return will give Brad his 3-headed monster again.
- GWill is improving, and he’s becoming a solid and consistent contributor right before our eyes. And after his initial 0-25 skid behind the arc, he’s been over a 40% 3pt shooter. He’s defending, rebounding and energizing the bench. He’s learning how to use his muscular frame to his advantage on O and D. His confidence has grown over the past month.
The emergence of these 2 young ones, and combining them with Kanter and Smart (both have become key players of this team), and even Wanamaker, gives us the makings of a solid bench rotation.
Danny would have pulled the trigger on at least one trade — if it made sense to do it. But I think he and Brad feel good about this squad. When healthy, we can do serious damage. I’m not mad we stayed put.
