The way this team is constructed salary-wise, we are paying top dollar to our wings and ball handlers (and we’ll be paying more once Tatum is eligible for a contract extension). There’s not much cap space to go after bigs.
But in addition to that, the way this team is contructed schematically, we run our offense, and even defense through our wings and ball handlers. Meaning our 5 wings and ball handlers (Kemba-Hayward-Tatum-Jaylen-Smart) initiate and difect the offense, while the bigs act as lob options are dump off passes, and defensively, our 5 hustle and scramble, while funneling plays to our athletic defenders (RWill, Theis).
So really, what we are looking for in our bigs are long, fairly nimble guys who can be lob threats, and can move on defense to cover big and small players (not even necessarily shot blockers, more like shot disruptors).
RWill fits this mold almost to a tee. I think that’s why we brought in Poirier because he’s also cut from the same cloth.

A young guy to keep in mind in this draft, who is similar to RWill (a shade shorter, and built more like a SF than a PF, but can probably be used as a 4 or small ball 5 for Brad) is Mamadi Diakite from Virginia. Like RWill, he is a quick burst athlete who covers ground quickly. He’s a lob threat, as well as a deceloping perimeter threat.
