When the nerves calm down and the dust settles, I’m thinking we’ll have a bench capable of supporting our starting 5 as we aim for the championship.
Kanter
RWill
GWill
Carsen
Smart
Kanter is a proven big man whose question mark is his defense (which Brad is good about limiting), while his calling cards are rebounding and low post scoring. As he showed with Portland last year, Kanter is a playoff contributor.
Brad doesn’t play players, or give playing time to those who haven’t earned it, or deserve it. For us to see Robert Williams playing meaningful minutes, even late in tight games means he’s quickly improving and doing the right things. Far from being established, RWill is working his way to get to that level — and come playoff time, we could see a player who looks much different, and better than the one we see now.
It is only a matter of time before we see the impact GWill has on our success. He’s a lot like Marcus in that his contributions are not merely based off points, rebounds and assists. The small things that lead to success is what Grant specializes in.
Carsen Edwards is going to heat up. Teams will have to keep an eye on him when he checks into the game. Sure he hasn’t made a splash yet, but it’s coming. Just you wait. You can almost guarantee that he’s going to knock down one or a couple of 3s a game. He’s just itching to do it. But for now he’s trying to be a good rookie and give the ball to his older teammates. But his teammates will encourage him to shoot it, so when Carsen starts feeling the liberty to take shot, look out NBA.
I don’t need to say anything about Mahcus. Even his harshest critic (JMost) has come around on Smart’s positive impact on our team. He’s the unofficial leader of this team. And when we are winning and doing the right things, you can be sure Smart is a big reason why.
This bench, as young as it is, I think is more than good enough to contend deep into the playoffs.
