We didn't strengthen our team this offseason, we weakened it, while the rest of the division added to it.
I really am amazed that the Celtics have 11 wins right now....they really should have less wins....but the improved play of Blount, Pierce and Davis has produced some unexpected wins. Puba is the eternal pessimist but I think he has a number of valid points regarding our talent level. So the rest of the league has improved while we languish with one star (Pierce), one nice player (RD), one decent young player (DEL West) and two overpaid journeymen (Reaf and Blonut) and a bunch of kids who are talented and clueless and a weak coaching staff. If that is true, we the Celtics are truly in a tough spot and we should be grateful if they play hard and hustle only to lose close hard fought games with classier competition. If that is so, then I will live with a 50 loss season, and hope the next basketball jesus falls into our lap at the next June draft. Happy New Year, Puba.

In addition: Are Pierce and RD making anyone better players around them? Have Pierce and RD truly replaced Pierce and Walker?
What if we inactivated them for January and forced the others to step up and learn their roles better? Would we better off in the long run?

If we play hard, and the kids improve, I'll be happy. I dont know what everyone was thinking when they expected us to be solid. I expected somewhere in the mid-30s in wins, and it looks like that guess will be spot-on. I remember this pre-season some of the hype people had for our players. Where did it come from? Summer league play? I always hate when when people say we lost to a less talented squad. The Golden State game is a good example. Golden state has more talent than us. Compare their starting five to our starting five. Not even close. If I had my druthers, Id like to see us get rid of either Blount or Raef, if for nothing else but to force feed Perk and Al some minutes. Like I said, as long as the kids get PT, I'll be fine.

We very well could have been 16 - 11 if we were playing to our abilities, and if Tony Allen and Marcus Banks were not injured.
We aren't playing well, but the ability for us to be solid is there.

Do you really think so? This team last year was going towards a losing record, and the only thing that saved them was that 10-12 game Antoine honeymoon. And we no longer have two of the starters off of that team. Who was supposed to replace Walker's impact? I think anyone that expected Jefferson to fill those shoes this early was fooling themselves. I think I predicted 11/7 from him, and those numbers were way too optimistic, and some people had way higher expectations than that! Every fan of every team looks at their team in the preseason/spring training/summer drills and looks at them through rose colored glasses. I think its time to realize that the national media was right on this team. IMO, the east has improved, and we have, at least this season, slightly regressed. I am still happy with the direction of the team. I just think that people really overrated us coming into this season.

We are very capable of being a solid team this year. But we are going to have to play near perfect every game. Pierce and Ricky are going to have to work on getting open more, our bigs need to learn to set good picks, our ball handlers need to perfect using the screens, Jefferson and Banks are going to have to provide us with a big scoring punch off the bench, Raef and Blount need to be much better rebounders and defensive players, Perkins needs to be able to stay out of foul trouble, etc.
So you see, we are capable of being a solid team this year--but realistically, I'm realizing that its not likely that all these things will happen. The development of the young kids is crucially important, moreso than playing Ricky 42 minutes per game and moreso than letting Blount and Raef play big minutes. But as long as they are on the team, Doc will continue to use them exclusively, and this will negatively impact the development of our youngsters.
Its time to rebuild.
