The Boston Celtics reportedly made a draft promise to Washington Huskies guard Matisse Thybulle, according to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders.
The Celtics have the 14th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, which is on June 20. They also have the 20th pick and 51st overall picks.
This past season at Washington, Thybulle averaged 9.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 36 games. He shot 41.5 percent from the field, 30.5 percent from beyond the arc and 85.1 percent from the free-throw line.
The Celtics could be in need of guard depth this summer. Both Kyrie Irving (unrestricted) and Terry Rozier (restricted) are set to free agents. No one expects both guards to be back with Boston next season, especially Rozier who wants to be a starter in the NBA.
Thybulle had career averages of 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists in his four years at Washington. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds. The most points he scored in college was 26.

Not sure how I feel about Thybulle as a player. It’s great that he’s a world class defender, but his offense leaves a lot to be desired, based on his stats.
Is he going to be another tough defender and limited scorer (Avery, Jae, Smart, Baynes?).

We don't need anymore half player types if they are only for defense. Give me an offensive only player over a defensive type as they already have the skill to score, defense is effort which is more coachable.

I've been thinking about this too. I'm not sure Danny would make a promise at any of the draft picks unless he already knows what he would need to trade to get AD or any other star he would try to trade for. Can he promise to pick a player, not knowing if they are even keeping those picks? Seems strange to me.

A defensive player that can not shoot. I am not sure how real promises are, however there was a rumor the James Young draft that if Willie Calley Stein entered (he didn't)that BOS had a promise.

Not a sexy pick, but I can understand the logic if we pick him.
When we beat the Warriors a handful of times over the past 3 years, it was because of our tough defense we played on them. If we are aiming to beat the Warriors, the goal is not to be better than them at scoring, but to defend them well enough to take away their strength.
If that’s what Danny and Brad are thinking, then I can see why they’d take Thybulle. If his defense is that good, he can help take Curry and Thompson out of their comfort zone.

I guess he was a decent shooter before this year. Why he went backward I don't know, but maybe there's potential there. Replacement for Smart if he's traded?

Possibly. Or maybe add him with Smart to have 2 plus defenders in the backcourt.

No. I don't see having a backcourt where Smart is the better shooter. Danny wouldn't be that cruel to Celtics fans.

Looks like the Spurs have interest in Thybulle. With how well they draft, we ought to pay attention to whom they like.
