I like Delonte West' play and hustle and he seems to have the character of a true Celtic. (you know, not scared of floor burns, blood, hard fouls, not afraid to die, etc.)
Recently, we have discussed on this board though the need for a true point guard who can produce assists and get easy baskets for our go-to guys Pierce, Ricky, Al, etc - someone who can set the tempo of a game offensively, something I actually thought we were getting in Dickau.
I did a little research, and searched for who leads the league in assists/48 minutes since assists are probably the best indication of how well a point guard can distribute the ball. This in by no way means that if someone averages a certain amount of assists that makes them a great point guard, but it is a start and a good barometer of how well they can play the position.
Here is a list of the top 30 players in the league right now who lead this category of assists/48 minutes. Some are available. Some definitely are not. Who do you guys think would be possible to get in a trade, and who would we have to give up?
Rick Brunson - only played 1 minute the whole season. Doesn't count
Steve Nash - in a dreamworld
Brevin Knight - maybe we could sign him next year. Very short, defensive liability, but is an assist machine.
Baron Davis - unavailable, I go into temporary rages when I think back that we could have had him for relatively cheap.
Chauncey Billups - see above, averaging 8.4 assist?!? unbelievable
Carlos Arroyo - don't really like him
Andre Miller - he is a possibility, but would probably have to give up Pierce. Would NEVER do that. Dre has an enormous contract as well. Don't think will happen.
Jose Calderon - Toronto's future point
Jason Kidd - staying in NJ/BK
Raymond Felton - Charlotte's future point
Beno Udrih - this guy could be had for cheap, don't know much about him other that he averages less minutes/gm than most of these players
Sam Cassell - not a good fit
Howard Eisley - too old
Shaun Livingston - would have to trade Pierce. NOPE. too injury prone
Luke Ridnour - Seattle's future point
Boris Diaw - a forward, not a point guard
Jamaal Tinsley - I would trade for him.
Antonio Burks - we have Banks, similar player I believe
T.J. Ford - NOPE. Milwaukee future point
Chris Paul - same as above
Kirk Hinrich - same as above
Tony Parker - same as above
Jannero Pargo - no pargo for me thank you very much
Dwyane Wade - in a dream world
Dan Dickau - next
Brad Miller - I could just see Brad running the break and dishing to Ricky for an alley-oop.
Chris Duhon - Like Tinsley, this guy is a possibility. Someone will be out of Chicago eventually. They have too many guards right now.
Allen Iverson - I like the Answer, not a good fit
Mateen Cleaves - would be a decent backup. Don't really need him.
Earl Boykins - a sparkplug player. not a starting point guard.
Obviously, there are more choices out there, but from looking on this list, only a few are real possibilities that would help to make the team better. Would it be worth it, or should we just stick with Delonte at the point guard postition?
I say try to make a nice package together and pry Tinsley away from Indiana. Jackeviscus....whatever makes him expendable, and I think he can be had for cheap. What do ya'll think?
