I’m not happy about going into the offseason, especially on such a sour note as being demolished by the Bucks in humiliating fashion. But I am relieved that this drama of a season is over. It was difficult embracing this team because this group of players never embraced each other, and you just felt the tension all year long.
But it is over, and there’s nothing we can do to change what happened.
But I’m looking forward in anticipation for what’s up ahead, starting with this summer. And the way I see it, we have 4 choices to choose from:
1) Minimal changes / stay the course
I think Terry is gone, and that itself might lead to cleaner air in the lockerroom. With hs comments on social media following last night’s season ending loss, I can see why there was built up animosity in the huddle. With him leaving, and we picking up a few better role players, we may be able to salvage this unit yet (but admittedly, we’re going to need pick uo some really key role players).
2) Move on from Kyrie / Acquire other star players
It’s been noted that Kyrie and Brad never truly clicked. And Kyrie balloons himself so much in interviews, you have to wonder if Kobe is feeding him words to say through a concealed ear piece. Maybe this marriage between coach and star player won’t work. If so, Kyrie needs to go and Ainge has to find a different star player (Kemba? Kawhi? Klay Thompson?).
3) Blow up this team / build around Kyrie
If Ainge knows Kyrie is a key chip to bringing home a trophy, and wants to surround him with the highest level of talent he can, he’ll need to blow up this team by sending out our young players and draft assets. Trade for Anthony Davis, and wait until Kevin Durant opts out of his contract with Golden State and then lure him in. That trio of Durant-Davis-Kyrie, plus surrounding them with 3-D players, will compete for titles.
4) Blow it up / go with the youth movement
If Ainge sees that giving up all assets to acquire Anthony Davis, but finding that 3rd star banana is not feasible, he may elect to go young and get rid of our near / over 30 stars, and build around Tatum. We've got a lot of draft picks this year, so maybe retool and refit this squad into a college team like environment that Coach Brad does so well with.
Stay tuned Celtics fans, for this summer is going to be another exciting offseason for us.
