He was having a monstrous year before injuring his knee — but many still question his impact on the next level. Is he for real? Or will his game not translate in the NBA?
His main criticisms are that he’s short (6’6”-6’7”), that he relies on bullying weaker / smaller college players, and that his perimeter game is poor.
Those are all merited, but Zion’s strengths outweigh his weaknesses, in my opinion.
This kid has tremendous feel for scoring. He doesn’t bully bis way back in to the post or bulldoze his way to the basket — he uses great agility and crafty power dribbles to get to the rim. And even when he misses, he’s the first guy to get his hands on the rebound and put his shot back up before defenders can react.
He’s highly creative as well. Some compare him to Larry Johnson, but that’s a weak comparison, as Zion is so much more creative, explosive and skilled than Grandmama. Even on counter moves, Zion puts himself in good scoring position to put up a makeable shot.
And he has finess for such a powerful guy. He softly and deftly lays balls off the backboard, even on hard attacks at the rim. And he also utilizes bank shots, which strong guys usually have a hard time doing.
To see him race downcourt with the ball is all the more impressive when you consider how bulky and powerful he is. Guys his size aren’t supposed to move that fast, or have that kind of body control, or be able to dribble with such dexterity.
Zion may never shoot like Chris Mullins, but with his skillset, you can utilize him in so many other ways. His shot isn’t necessarily broken, more that he just hasn’t focused on it as much as needs to.
I think this kid is going to be a star, and excite the NBA.
And for some reason, I see New York ending up with the #1 pick this summer 😜
