The Spurs didn't counter offer, meaning trade talks were still at its infancy stage. But the fact that Ainge made an offer means that he had definite interest to trade for Kawhi and made a feeler offer.
I think how it works is when GM's talk to one another, it's just that -- they talk and gauge how serious, and how possible it is for both sides to make a deal. The next step will be to make an offer, and then comes the counter offer and negotiating.
For whatever reason, the Spurs didn't entertain a counter offer -- maybe they still hold hope they can keep Kawhi happy and in San Antonio, maybe they think they can get a better deal from Ainge, or another team in the summer.
But that's pretty big that Ainge was willing to seek a trade in February for Kawhi.

Interesting. Kawhi has one more year on his contract and can then opt out; same as Kyrie. For monetary reasons, both will certainly opt out and become free agents. So it's risky. Either we trade them for each other, which I don't see because we need a PG more than another wing, or the two teams have to do a multi-player deal to make salaries match. Who are we willing to part with for one year guaranteed of Kawhi? Certainly not Tatum. Maybe we put together a package headlined by Jaylen. Even that would be risky unless we have some kind of feel that Kawhi would stay. Danny sure keeps things interesting!

If both players passed their respective physicals, would you do a Kawhi for Kyrie swap? Even if we threw in a couple of late round 1sts (say, our 2017 pick and the LAC pick)? I think I would. Kyrie is great, but Kawhi is a goddamn monster. Plus, I think you could get Rozier to a reasonable contract if he was given the starter role.
Rozier Hayward Kawhi Tatum Horford
With Jaylen, Smart, Morris and Baynes off the bench? That team is bonkers. And it's still under the luxury tax for this season!

I would like to know fact from fiction. Ainge's job is to improve the roster. He could have offered a bag of Cheetos.

Who knows what Ainge offered in February. Not enough to make the Spurs bite, anyway. I'd want to know what the real story about Kawhi's injury last season. According to reports the doctors cleared him to play in the playoffs but he didn't. It was just all very strange. I would still like to give Kyrie and Hayward a chance to play together. I've been looking forward to seeing them together for over a year and I want to see it.

Would we be able to add Lebron to that team? BTW, I don't think Kyrie and draft picks will be enough for the Spurs. Maybe Kyrie and Jaylen (but we keep our picks). I'd think the Spurs would have a hard time saying no to that offer.

Man, I don't think I could pull the trigger on that. I've been on Team Jaylen since day one. I'd counter offer the SAC 2019 pick. If they said no thanks, I'd wish them the best of luck.

At any rate, I find it staggering to hear that Ainge made an offer for Kawhi. While we were enjoying a fascinating season, and looking forward to this great future ahead of us with the young team we have, under our nose Danny was open to gutting the team.
With us widely being promoted as the heir apparent to dethrone the Warriors, as currently constructed, this doesn't deter Danny from making a major change.
But that's why Danny is good at what he does, and why he's the best in the business.

Danny's always going to inquire when a great player might be available. I imagine the process was much the same as when Kyrie started saying he wanted out of Cleveland.

The difference I see in that situation and this one is, back when we traded for Kyrie, Ainge did not feel he had a contending team -- he knew sweeping changes needed to be made. He was looking for major changes. This time around, with this team nearly complete and ready, at the very least, to be the best team in the East as currently constructed, not many folks feel we need to make a big splash and disrupt the good thing we have going on. Trading for Kawhi will definitely change our dynamic because we're going to lose players we highly esteem. And Danny is willing to do that. Now, what other GM would mess with a good thing? Only a very small few, if that. But Danny will.

I really do not think Danny is going to stop changing the team until BOS has a team that he feels can win multiple championships. If you recall, one of Danny's first moves ever as GM was to trade A Walker, because he was a ball stopper.

You thought the all clear sign was given, but nope -- he's always got his finger on the trigger, ready to make a deal. Which means, no one on the team should ever feel safe. I kinda think Gordon Hayward is safe, but you never know.

Only person that is safe is Brad Stevens. In him, you got a long term coach...the sort you have with Pops.
