Ok, so let's say this is our death lineup. How can we improve the bench so that we have an efficient scoring and defending 2nd unit?
I don't think we can roll out Rozier, Smart and Morris -- way too streak and unpredictable. Maybe 2 of those 3 need to be replaced with upgrades.
Pretty sure Baynes will sign back with us. Daniel Theis will be healthy and building upon his solid rookie season. Somehow or other, Semi will get playing time because of his defensive versatility. Those 3 can anchor the frontcourt off the bench.
So what we ideally need are solid perimeter threats who can handle the ball.

I don't remember teams rolling out entire second units until fairly recently. There were always 2-3 starters mixed in with the bench guys. And I think it works better that way - at least in games that matter most. Over the long regular season we probably want to have a deeper rotation, but in the playoffs going more than 8 deep isn't always wise - unless your bench is really deep. With Kyrie, Hayward and Tatum you have three guys who can create offense. I think we keep one of them on the court at all times to go with whoever the bench guys are. IMO the best way to improve our outside shooting, beyond the fact that we are getting two great shooters back next year, is to replace Smart with ANYONE else.

First unit, second unit concept is more associated with the NHL, like line shifts. Stevens can just sub early, or more often. There are certain players that should be on the floor always, like a 2 out of 3 or 1 out of 3 concept or the offense/defense sags.

Sorry if I led you guys to that conclusion. No, I'm not saying we take out all the starters at the same time and empty the bench.
Talking about the bench in general, and what we need to have a complete bench.

I think that 2nd unit will have plenty of offense, because I doubt there will be a time when at least one of Hayward/Brown/Tatum isn't on the court. I'm sure Stevens will stagger the lineup so always one of our premier scorers is out there. That team's defensive abilities will be unreal, and they'll be solid offensively. That team will challenge for a title IMO.

Talking about the bench in general, and what we need to have a complete bench. 1. A back-up center. Theis. 2. A 3-D. Semi. 3. PG. Rozier. Missing is a stretch 4. I do not want Morris playing. I cringe every time he gets the ball, because he shoots.

Danny, do not trade for Kawhi if in your heart of hearts you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jaylen Brown will come close to what Kawhi Leonard is at his peak.
That's a tall order. That means perennial All-Star, All-NBA teamer, a tremendous two-way player who is a highly efficient scorer and lock down defender, a guy who is clutch, an MVP candidate.
Granted, it's going to be tough to showcase all this on a team full of All-Stars -- but it'll come through, it'll shine forth, if it's in him.
There's no need to trade for Kawhi if Jaylen Brown can become a poor man's Kawhi Leonard.

I think Semi improving will help the bench tremendously not to mention Theis being healthy again to pair with Rozier and hopefully a less needed Morris (and maybe no Smart or less Smart).
I agree that I'd rather roll the dice on what Brown can become than have to give him up to get Kawhi. The difference in money, age, and chemistry are the big factors for me. Granted, if we swapped one of our max guys for Kawhi that'd be different but I have no idea why we'd do that unless someone is unhappy and I'd rather not disrupt what we have since we know the team works well together as constructed.

If we sent Jaylen I don't see any need to send any draft picks with Jaylen. It should be straight up although the money has to work.

I'm under the impression that due to the Rose Rule we can't have Davis and Kyrie at the same time unless Kyrie signs an extension first

I'm under the impression that due to the Rose Rule we can't have Davis and Kyrie at the same time unless Kyrie signs an extension first Which it seems like is on tract to happen (Kyrie signing an extension with us). And I don't think NOR is shopping Davis currently, and maybe not until they get a pretty good idea that he's not going to pick up his player's option with them in the summer of 2020.
