And with his new weapon, the corner three, he’s even more what we’re looking for.

I don't know all the details but I believe the issue with Baynes is that we only signed him to a one year deal so we don't have Bird rights to him. I think I read that we can only offer him a certain % increase to what we originally signed him for.

I found this information from a cap guru. The Celtics will be able to offer Baynes up to $5.16 million as a starting salary with their Non-Bird Rights (120 percent of his 2017-18 salary. The MLE this season is $8.5 million. Some team may offer the MLE for Baynes because he is a very valuable player to have. Danny may have to dig into the MLE for Baynes if he wants to keep him if someone else offers him the MLE.
However, Baynes was talking like he really wanted to stay with the team and see what they could do next season so maybe he will take a little less to stay.

Yeah, Baynes sounded like he really wanted to be back with this team. If he’s looking to win a title, he ought to stick with us.

The MLE went from like $4.4 to $8.5m? I want Baynes back in green.

I think it depends on whether or not you are over the salary cap already. Since we are, I don't think the higher number applies.

$4.4m is the room MLE, and $8.5m is the full MLE. I believe that not using the full MLE provides some flexibility in trades (salary).

From hoopsrumors.com www.hoopsrumors.com/2017/06/values-of-201718-mid-level-bi-annual-exceptions.htmlMid-Level Exception (Non-Taxpayer): Year Salary 2017/18 $8,406,000 2018/19 $8,826,300 2019/20 $9,246,600 2020/21 $9,666,900 The non-taxpayer mid-level exception is the primary tool available for over-the-cap teams to add free agents. As long as a team hasn’t dipped below the cap and doesn’t go over the tax apron (currently projected to be $127MM) at all, it can use this MLE, which runs for up to four years with 5% annual raises. In 2016/17, this exception was only worth up to $5,628,000 in year one, so it will rise in value significantly next season. That makes it a legitimate option to land second- or third-tier free agents who would have required cap room to sign in the past. Mid-Level Exception (Taxpayer): Year Salary 2017/18 $5,192,000 2018/19 $5,451,600 2019/20 $5,711,200 If an over-the-cap team currently projects to be a taxpayer, or expects to move into tax territory later in the 2017/18 season, it will have access to this smaller mid-level exception for taxpaying teams. If a team uses more than $5.192MM of its mid-level exception, it is forbidden from surpassing the tax apron (projected at $127MM) at any time during the league year. So even if a team isn’t above the apron when it uses its MLE, it might make sense to play it safe by avoiding using the full MLE and imposing a hard cap. In 2016/17, the taxpayer mid-level exception – which was only used by the Cavs – was worth $3,477,000. The taxpayer MLE can be used to sign a player for up to three years, with 5% annual raises.

Thanks.. mev17. So, what does that mean for us? Are we a taxpayer?

Thanks.. mev17. So, what does that mean for us? Are we a taxpayer? Right now, no. Sign Smart to a large deal, yes.

This is just another reason not to sign Smart.

According to John Martin (I guess he's a reporter? with the Grizzlies), Boston is one of 5 teams interested in Tyreke Evans. The others are reportedly, the Pistons, the Pacers, the Heat, and the Grizz.
If Tyreke wants to join a team heading for the Finals, we should be his one and only choice (those other teams aren't winning their conference).

Cross him off the list, as he signed with the Pacers.
