After scoring 20+ pts and 5+ rebounds in back to back conference final games, Jaylen Brown has become the only player in history to accomplish this at the age of 21 and younger. Not Kobe, not Lebron, etc, just Jaylen.
What is the next step for Jaylen in his development? Consistency? I'd like to see him average 25 ppg for this series.
Become a closer? Yes, I'd like to see him add the finishing touches under 2 minutes.
Go to guy? Yup, when the offense begins to putter, and its clear that Smart and Morris will continue to chuck away and miss, I want Jaylen to take the initiative of scoring.

The only thing what will keep Jaylen from averaging 25 PPG in the future is having so many other good scorers on his team that there aren't enough shots to go around. Kyrie and Gordon have already averaged 20 PPG. Jayson is clearly capable of it. And then you add in guys who can score 20 semi-regularly like TR3, Morris and Horford.
I don't know if we want or need Jaylen, or anyone for that matter, to be THE GUY. I think what is making us so hard to guard is having multiple threats out there. The key is to keep the ball moving. We're gonna be a nightmare to guard when Kyrie, JB, Gordon, JT and Al are out there together, and we won't be losing much when TR or Morris sub in either.
I do wonder if there will come a time when someone communicates to Marcus Smart that he's most valuable when he drives or posts up (which he's pretty good at) and that he should limit his outside shots.

Yeah, I don't expect Jaylen to reach 25 ppg once we have Kyrie and Hayward back. Durant and Curry are averaging 26 in their unselfish system, and I expect we'll be that way too.
I was talking about Jaylen averaging 25 in this CLE series.

I went off-topic. Sorry. I do think Jaylen could easily score 25 per game if he wanted to. But just like Jayson's 20+ point streak was broken because we didn't need him to score in the last 6 minutes, Jaylen may not average as much if the games aren't close.

i think tightening up his ballhandling is the next step. his handles aren't the tightest. after that. keep perfecting that turnaround J.

i think tightening up his ballhandling is the next step. his handles aren't the tightest. after that. keep perfecting that turnaround J. I agree, and also aknowledge that his handles have improved quite a bit since last year. With the influence of Kyrie, it seems Jaylen and Rozier’s handles have seen improvement. I envision this summer will be spent in the summer further working on ball handling.

With all the data and statistics I want someone to tell me another player in NBA history who is adding so many aspects to his game in such a short period of time? Jaylen was always an exciting prospect - but it was mainly physical (size, speed, length, athleticism) which meant we knew he had a very high potential although lots of prospects do. We saw it his rookie year, the faults that everyone knew - shooting, midrange game, dribbling, being a black hole, defensive IQ, careless and forcing the issue. In, what seems like a short time, Jaylen has debuted a consistent 3-point shot, fadeaways, steps backs, pull-ups, posting up, shooting off the pick, spin moves, better playmaking decisions, and being a defensive force. He does everything now. Granted, we only see certain parts at certain times and when he puts it all together for a stretch in a game we've seen him take over and be deadly. We've also seen him turn the ball over and revert to the same errors from Rookie year where he goes out of control, but much less.
What he needs to do now - is refine and go from average/good to great in each of these previously weak aspects so that he's impacting the game night in and night out regardless of how is shooting or the looks he gets.

And apparently he's been working on his trash talking as well. Saw this on celtics.com today:
------------
Teammate Marcus Smart is a first-hand witness to much of Brown’s trash talk and says that it seems to have a profound impact on the recipients.
“It’s just things just from [saying], ‘You can't guard me,’ to the flexes, the poses, to calling people ‘little one’ when he posts them up and things like that. When a guy is doing that and he backs it up, it kind of gets into your head like, ‘You know what, I don't really know if I can guard this guy.’
“That’s a mental thing, a part of the game that a lot of good players understand," continued Smart. "The mental game is just as much important as the physical.”
------------
Well, Bird and Jordan were notorious trash talkers, so maybe this is indicative of Jaylen wanting to be not just good, not just great, but dominant.

Jaylen’s next step in this postseason is to come out every game and prove he is the best player wearing a Celtics jersey. If he’s not scoring 20+, he hasn’t done his job.

Where the hell was he last night? Until the end of the third, when he hit consecutive 3 pointers he was completely invisible - other than committing fouls. I was wondering if he was sick or injured. Just didn't show up at all. So, yeah, he has to bring it every game. That's what stars do.

They were denying him the ball in the very beginning of the game and it seemed like he didn't want to work to get it. I think it was also a team offense issue. We rarely worked hard to get a good shot. Way to many guys settling to take an easy, bad jumpshot/3 in the 1st quarter and we dug a hole early and never got out. It's like we expected the Cavs offense to be as porous as it has been and when they showed slight effort/resistance we panicked a bit and didn't run our offense the way it should or has been run.
