We were a scrappy, punch-you-in-the-mouth kind of defense the past few years, and were one of the league's best (though last year, we slipped to middle of the pack because we didn't give it our all).
This year, with a revamped roster that is practically brand spanking new, we're a different type of defensive team, but maybe more impressive.
At any given time, we have at least 2 - 3 players on the court who stand between 6'7" - 6'9", who can switch defensively on guards and wings and some big men, and do a good job of staying with them. Altogether, we have 6 of these kind of guys:
Jaylen Tatum Hayward Morris Semi Theis
It is impressive watching how seamlessly we switch and rotate on defense, going from guarding small and quick guys to t
And then we also have 2 really good defenders in Smart and Rozier, who do a good job guarding smaller players.
In the paint, we have Horford, who is a cerebral defensive player who makes people take tough shots, and we have Baynes, who is made of granite and cannot be moved by any mortal.
We pretty much have all quadrants covered.
But rather than try to fight and scrap and play in your face, our defense now is about bothering teams with height, length, positioning, active hands, and gang rebounding.
I'd like t see this team be a top 3 defense, and I think we can do that.

One of the guys was talking a while back specifically about the "length" of this group, and how hard it was going to be for other teams to get passes through.

And along with the length, guys have active hands. They're constantly swiping at balls, trying to strip balls loose, getting their hands in passing lanes, etc.

I was afraid that the defense would take a hit this season with the departure of Jae and Avery. But I've been impressed with what I saw so far in the preseason. They are long, athletic and active. Even Kyrie is working hard on defense - more than he did in Cleveland. And, I think it will get even better as they play together more.
