Not only is Brad Stevens a wonderful human being, but he's also a darn good head coach as well. This endorsement comes not only from his own players, but from players on the opposing bench; even rival coaches and GM's have high praises for him. Since his days at Butler, he's been marveled for being able to take lesser players, and form a cohesive team that defies conventional wisdom by quickly ascending to the very top. The same has happened since coming to Boston -- in 4 quick years, he went from rebuild to the ECF, and not with a whole bunch of great players either. Many of them were role players who Brad made shine, by drawing up plays that put them in position to succeed.
At today's media session, Kyrie spoke about this to Marc D'Amico. He said he already saw some of the plays that Brad has come up with that is designed for Kyrie, and he's excited about it -- plays designed for him to drive, where he is at his most dangerous. Kyrie worked a lot to get points before, having to go iso and break his man down, and then do creative and acrobatic moves, and use his deft touch to get the ball through the hoop. Brad is designing plays that will make it easier on Kyrie. Kyrie also said Utah didn't utilize Hayward's skills and abilities, and Brad will. Can you imagine that we have yet to see the best of Kyrie and Gordon?
This is where Brad the Mastermind will finally get the full credit he deserves. He's never had an assembly of players as talented as the guys he has now -- starting with the Big 3, but also going down the roster, we have more skilled players, more athletic players, more diverse players, more taller and lengthier players than we've had since Brad got here. He has more talent to work with, instead of relying on limited players doing more than they're capable of doing. With more arrows in his quiver, Brad can broaden his attack strategy.
Brad isn't the type to rest on his laurels -- he preaches and expects development and growth from his players, and I'm sure he expects it of himself too. He gets better year after year. Now the pressure is on him because he's got heavy artillery now. To bow out in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs will be a big time disappointment. We're all expecting Brad the Mastermind to deliver us another ECF appearance, with at least 2 wins this time, and maybe even a trip to the Finals.
