I don't know if anyone has dug deep enough to uncover the real reason why Kyrie asked to be traded off a team that has a chance to compete for another title. I heard stuff about Lebron, maybe Kyrie wants to prove he's the Man, etc. But there's more beneath the surface that hasn't been unearthed.
Anyone know?

I really believe it's about playing in LeBron's shadow. A while back he said something like "Don't 'son' me", referring to James. He's a grown man, a multi-time all-star, an elite scorer, a big-game player, and he doesn't want to be the clear second fiddle. Some guys are wired that way. It didn't bother McHale, or Pippen, but apparently it does bother Irving.
I'll add one thing: I think there's a difference between not wanting to be the clear second fiddle, and needing to be "The Man". The third possibility is being happy being co-leader with one or more other players.

Kyrie:
“That moment comes and you take full advantage of it, and there are no other ulterior reasons other than being happy and wanting to be somewhere where you feel like it’s an environment that’s conducive for you maximizing your potential as a human being, and as a player perfecting their craft”

Kyrie is like a "different type of dude", which was the quote to describe Smart. One trait Danny likes in his players.

I don't think it's so much playing in LeBron's shadow but the fact that he dominates the lockerroom and the culture around the Cavs. I think also, he saw the reports of LeBron leaving at the end of this season and he didn't want to be left there with what's left of the mess that LeBron leaves. He wanted to take his career in his own hands and go where he could grow more and be his own player rather than whoever LeBron wants him to be.

As a player, you want to control the things you can control. Lebron on a 1-year deal is just not that.
