At the end of the day, what hangs fans up on this trade is the BRK pick. Had it been some other future pick, they'd be consenting this trade.
But Danny is not dumb, and we all know he holds onto draft picks tightly. He said he knows how valuable this BRK pick is, but that he valued Kyrie more. That is an important statement right there.
For sure, BRK's pick will be in the lottery, very possible to be a top 4. But it is no guarantee. The East is weaker than a year ago, and there are some teams looking to be in tank mode. Aside from that, Brooklyn is trying to climb out of the gutters, and they have some good people in topside who are looking to get things rolling. Sean Marks is the Nets new GM, and he came over from San Antonio, where he was groomed by one of the very best GMs, RC Buford. I read that the Spurs didn't want to let him go (which speaks to his potential). Also, coach Kenny Atkinson is an up and coming creative coach who many think can right the ship in BRK. The Nets also imported D'Angelo Russell and Allen Crabbe, both who will boost BRK's perimeter offense, along with Jeremy Lin. Again, they'll still be a bad team, but not likely to be as bad as last year.
Another aspect of losing the BRK pick that has fans upset is the player we may have ended up drafting. There are many attractive names in this coming draft, whom we had a shot at taking (many of whom I'm a fan of as well). But the draft is a gamble, and outside of the [HASH]1 pick, chances are against them reaching stardom. Take Mo Bamba for instance -- crazy athleticism and physical measurables, but extremely raw. He has bust potential. Michael Porter has a beautiful jumper, but mentally I don't think he has the killer mentality . Marvin Bagley has the height to play the 4, and the fluidity of a 3 -- but he's not a natural scorer, and I question his basketball instincts as well. Doncic lacks foot speed and athleticism. Ayton isn't a freakish athlete. You can go down the line and question if these guys will turn out to be stars.
With Kyrie, we know we're getting an All-NBA caliber player.
So, taking all these into consideration, Ainge must have felt it was a worthy gamble to give away the BRK pick. Plus, with the West getting stronger, the LAL pick might end up the better pick.
