Allen pleads not guilty to charges Posted: Tuesday December 6, 2005 3:25PM; Updated: Tuesday December 6, 2005 3:25PM CHICAGO (AP) -- Boston Celtics guard Tony Allen pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to aggravated battery charges stemming from a fight over the summer that escalated into a shooting outside a diner here.
The Chicago native entered his plea in Cook County court, state's attorney spokesman Tom Stanton said.
Allen, who is free on $150,000 bond, is accused of punching a man in the face and breaking his left eye socket during an Aug. 29 fight at the White Palace Grill. Another man was shot in the left arm and left side, but police said Allen is not suspected in the shooting.
Allen's attorney, Michael Zaslavsky, said he is confident Allen will be acquitted.
"Tony is anxious to resume his basketball career and put this incident behind him," he said.
The 6-foot-4 Allen, who was drafted by the Celtics 25th overall in the 2004 draft, started 34 games as a rookie, averaging 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds a game.
Aggravated battery carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, prosecutors said.
Allen's next court date was set for Jan. 17.

Well, this gives Tony a little more than a month to get himself back into basketball shape before his next court hearing. A healthy Tony Allen will make us aware of how much we missed him.

I'd rather see Tony Allen on the basketball court than the Cook County Court in Chicago trying to be acquitted of aggravated assault charges.
He has hurt himself and the Celtics.

We have yet to see Tony Allen scratch the surface of his abilities. Many fans rebounder only his highlight film dunks and the way he'd come out of nowhere and sky in for putback dunks off of misses. But he has more to offer than that. Allen's an incredible slasher, thanks to his athletic ability, his quickness, and his ball handling ability. He's got the skills to take it to the rim, make adjustments in midair, and get off an acrobatic shot. We still have yet to see him really exploit this part of his game.
