Bradley was interviewed this week, and he talked about a lot of things. One question he was asked was why did his rebounding total jump up this season.
He said back when Tyronne Lue was an assistant coach here (this was many years ago), he was told by Lue that he should be able to grab lots of rebounds. With how athletic he is, and how high he can jump, Lue harped on him to go get rebounds.
But it wasn't till this year that Avery willed himself to do just that.
First of all, why did it take this long for Avery to make this a part of his game? Why couldn't he have done this years ago, when Lue suggested it?
Now the question becomes, how many other players can contribute more to their team if they want to? Can Olynyk grab 10 boards a game if he determined himself to do that?

It's a question I ask about most players. You'd just assume, they'd be going 100% at every facet of the game, but we know that's not true with many players (defense/offense disparity). I guess you gotta pick and choose where your efforts and energy lie. There's a fatigue concern to their game where a player can't be everywhere at once (see Westbrook gassed in his last playoff games in the 4th quarter). It's funny that Avery makes it seem like it's just an effort thing, but I'd argue that this team was the most ripe for him to have the opportunities to grab boards since we lacked that interior player who crashes the boards. I don't think Olynyk could grab 10 boards a game if he tried his hardest because he's just not quick and strong enough down low for that where he can go, out-muscle guys, and get the rebounds. He's more of the type of player where you box out your best and hope the rebound bounces to you, I guess.

I think scheme had something to do with it as well. I'm pretty sure that I read CBS has instructed his bigs to focus primarily on boxing out, which leads to guards picking up more of the rebounds.

Its a combination of scheme, as well as a nose for the ball, and lastly the physicality aspect.
I hardly saw Olynyk fight for positioning.
I think we'll see what boxing out looks like when Zizic comes here.
