At first, I thought to get George, we'd have to give up Avery (and Crowder + picks). Zach Lowe seems to think it'll be Smart.
Of the two, which one would you prefer to keep?

Bradley. I've never liked him much as I like my players to be skilled on the offensive end, but he's one of the few players that you see actual results of progress on his game year in and out. I gotta hand it to him. He's definitely improved. It makes you wonder why other players aren't able to add to their game in the NBA when everybody knows their weaknesses. Smart is not efficient enough on the offensive end for this team I feel and I don't see him making the changes to his game to be an effective guard on both ends consistently.

Indeed, Bradley has improved his game (an aspect of it) every year. This summer, he's working on finishing at the rim so he can expand his offensive arsenal. Good for him. When you look for defensive impact, lot of times Marcus Smart seems to be the guy who gets more Youtube highlights. But as we heard the outcries from players around the league regarding Avery's snub from the All-Defensive teams, it is actually Bradley who has the greater impact on defense. But, cost should factor into the decision. Bradley is going to be up for a new contract, and he will be costly.

True. There's a lot at play.
Smart is 3 years younger. Hasn't had as long as Avery to improve his shot/offense. Can mature, play smarter. Pay difference.
I'd say we're in a good position where we can feasibly trade one off and not worry too much. Who it is might need to be based on salary matching and what the other teams wants. In a perfect world, you might want to keep the more complete player, but he may too expensive for our future plans too.

If we add Hayward and George, in addition to Tatum, and the continuing maturation of Brown, how many minutes are going to be available at SF - where Smart got a lot of his playing time? Not much I would say. He doesn't shoot well enough to play SG and doesn't penetrate well enough to play PG. I just don't see where he fits. Plus, I hate the flopping. Avery on the other hand I really like. Good guy, plays the game right, improves every year. I understand his contract is coming up, and he'll be expensive, but he's the guy I want.

How much is Smart going to get on his next contract in 2 years?
Bradley, I'm guessing, could easily get 15 mil a year on his new contract.
Right now, Smart is making 4.5 mil, and next year's qualifying offer will give him 6 mil. Will he make anywhere near what Bradley is going to get?
If he is, then it makes sense to hold onto Bradley, because he's a more well rounded 2-way player.

Unless his shooting gets a LOT better, Smart will have a limited market, I believe. It would have to be a team that desperately needed toughness. The fact that he can't shoot really messes up modern offenses built on spreading the floor.

So if he makes half of what Bradley will potentially make, does it make it financially wiser to keep him and move Avery?

I think it does. Evan Turner made 17mill last year. Jrue Holiday just signed for about 25 a year. Teague for about 19. Oladipo makes 21. JJ Redick just signed for 23 for one year. Avery could end up with a very very big contract. So could KO.

I don't really care about being over the cap and/or paying the luxury tax if it doesn't affect whether or not we can get the players we want, and I don't think paying AB more than we'd have to pay Smart is likely to prevent us from signing free agents. If we get Hayward, we won't be signing any major free agents for a long time anyway. If we don't, well, by this time next year we'll have a much better idea of what we have in Brown, Tatum, the Nets' pick and the Lakers/Kings pick, not to mention whether Smart's shooting has gotten any better. Maybe we don't have any interest in a major free agent. I say keep the better player - Bradley.

Hard to think of Bradley being an underrated player -- but he is an elite defender who scores 18 - 20 ppg who may never make the All-Star team (not that it means much).
