Like the precious ring in the Hobbits, what teams are mischiefly itching to get their fingers on is the 2018 Brooklyn Nets unprotected first round pick. They want to pry it away from Ainge, and possess that likely 1st overall pick for their own. Danny, for his part, knows the value of it, and is rightly keeping it at distance whenever someone approaches him about it.
If Danny is able to accomplish his mighty high goals he has set this summer and lures in Gordon Hayward, and successfully trades for Paul George WITHOUT giving up that BRK pick, Ainge hands down deserves the Executive of the Year. For by doing so, he is building an amazing and unique thing in Boston.
Like FL has pointed out, and what many others have been seeing, is Danny is assembling 2 teams -- the Current team and the Future team.
The Current team will potentially be anchored by 4 All-Stars: Horford, George, Hayward and IT. On any given night, this foursome is capable of combining for 80 pts.
The Future team, if Danny can successfully hold onto the prized BRK pick, will potentially be anchored by future stars as well: Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and DeAndre Ayton -- the young Center who I think has superstar potential (reminds me of David Robinson). That is a dynamic mixture of high talent and skill level, plus smarts and maturity.
Blend the Current and the Future team together into 1 cohesive unit, and you have yourself a potential dynasty that can compete against the NBA's best.
Already, with Horford, George, Hayward and IT, you have 4 high level, efficient and versatile scorers who CLE and GS will have trouble containing. Add in Ayton next year (I'll assume he shines right away) and you have a starting unit with very little flaws.
Then off the bench you have Zizic, a physical defender and rebounder; you have Jayson and Jaylen -- 2 young SF's who can score, rebound and defend, and Marcus Smart -- a pitbull defender. We'll have a strong 9 man rotation. And then add in guys like Yabusele, Ojeleye and Nader for deep bench depth.
That team can very well be a dynasty.
