A factor that is very important and often overlooked in a championship caliber team is chemistry and continuity. Look at the teams who win it all.... Detroit, San Antonio, the Lakers and Celtics of old... each team had a core that had played together for 2 or 3 years. They know each other, they trust each other. the Magic led Lakers had that core of players together for 4 or 5 years. The Bird led Celtics had a core together for 3 or 4 years.
Many teams with what seems like a ton of talent don't get to the next level because they aren't together long enough to build any kind of chemistry. I think of the Kobe/Shaq/Malone/Payton Lakers.... tons of talent and on paper they looked really good, but they had more bickering than chemistry. The Nets seemingly have a ton of talent with Carter, Kidd, Jefferson et al but haven't developed any chemistry and so are struggling.
We have a good core. We have two all star caliber players in PP and Ricky. We have a Center who is going to be dominant when he gets enough playing time to learn from his mistakes. We have a power forward in Al who has all the promise in the world and is being brought along slowly and spoon fed minutes to develop that potential without throwing him to the wolves. We have talent in the wings developing in Greene, Green, and Gomes. They are all growing together and game by game we will see the chemistry developing and as the chemistry develops, we will see the team getting better.
As much as I cringe when i see Veal come into the game and see him launch those perimeter shots I think Danny signed him with an eye toward chemistry. He is a good guy by all reports and I think Danny was looking at him as a chemistry/locker room guy. Same with Dickau... he is a good guy and a good teammate. Danny was looking at free agents with an eye toward chemistry. Granted I wish he would have had an eye toward talent along with chemistry, but I guess we can't always get what we want. These signings may pay dividends eventually on the court but they may be paying dividends in the locker room that we can't see in the development of a TEAM concept and the character of the team.
The part that doesn't fit in all this is Blount. He seems to be more disruptive to our chemistry than a help to it with his lack of intensity on the court and his complaining and grumbling off. Danny needs to trade Blount. He signed him because PP really wanted him to stay as the last link to the 2002 team that made it to the finals and he had an excellent year in his contract year. But now with one year of horrible play behind him and his attitude surfacing again, I think we need to do our very best to trade him. His lacksadaisical play is enough to warrant getting rid of him, but add to that the fact that we can't develop the kind of chemistry that wins championships with one player who is constantly going in the other direction. We may have to trade one of those young building blocks to get rid of him, maybe Marcus would be the most logical since he has been on the outside somewhat also.
I don't think we should trade any of the core parts of this team (other than Blount) We have talent... we have potential... we just need growth and to build trust and continuity now.
