Widely regarded as the best of this year's class and as an impact scorer in the NBA, Danny Ainge has chosen not to take him, even though getting scorers was one of his top priorities.
What does this move tell us about Markelle Fultz?

I think it shows that Ainge doesn't see him as some transcendent talent.
I also think it shows what Ainge thinks of Josh Jackson (or Tatum, Fox, Ball or whoever he drafts at the 3 spot). Ainge knows how much is riding on this deal. But if he can get a stud player AND 2 more unprotected picks destined for the lottery? That's insane.

The deal is protected. LAL 2018, if it falls 2-5, if not then SAC 2019, unprotected. Why? 2018 is a top heavy draft, Danny does not want the pick if it falls after 5.

FYI....The Fakers pick is 2-6 protected. One of my best friends is a Faker fan...I have been telling him since the trade all about how their pick next year will either help Boston himself or be traded for a superstar that will allow us to win our next championship before they will. With it being 2-6 protected, another reason to root for the Fakers to lose.

The Lakers keep it if it is [HASH]1 OR [HASH]6 or later. Otherwise we get it ([HASH]2-[HASH]5). At least that's what's been reported.

Initially, I thought we got snubbed with such a restricted pick -- but actually it is to our benefit that the Lakers pick will only be ours if it falls between 2 - 5. We got a chance to get a premium pick. And if it doesn't fall in that area, we automatically get Sacramento's 2019 FRP "unprotected", which in all likelyhood is going to be a premium pick, since they're going to be bottom dwelllers for a while.
I think that's what Danny fanagled out of Colangelo.

This is from the official press release. And on the conference call youtu.be/tPikNbsEvqkDanny said that he felt that there's a very good chance that the player they pick at [HASH]3 would be the same player that they would have taken with [HASH]1 and that they don't feel that there is that big a gap between the players at the top of the draft. They have a couple of players in mind for the pick and he knows that at least one of them will be there.

So we basically will not get the top overall pick if LA, Philly or SAC ends up getting it. But I'm ok with that gamble cause [HASH]2 or [HASH]3 should still net us a darn good franchise building block player.
