How much will we miss Avery Bradley if we traded him away?

Avery is a very good player, but I think the addition of Fultz, even as a rookie, would probably cancel out AB's contribution.

I take this to mean:
- that Bradley's defense is overrated (or Fultz, even as a rookie, can add similar defensive value) - that Fultz offensive value will overshadow Bradley's defensive contributions

I don't think it will hurt lots in the grand scheme of things. I expect Fultz to be good and for Rozier and Smart to get a little better. And Jaylen.
But when we realize AB will cost quite a lot it won't bother us to see him gone. There has to be minutes available for young guys to play and get better. At the very least I don't think we will miss AB as much as we miss good bigs right now. Someone that can get rebs and alter shots. We just don't have one and it's a problem.
Amir got old, T Zeller isn't that great (but I think he's underrated) and KO will probably leave. Also Jordan M didn't get much better lately. That is a problem that we don't have much of an answer for.

How much we miss him may depend on how soon we are good enough to get past Cleveland and challenge the Warriors. AB might give Curry as much trouble as anyone in the league. That's a nice weapon to have and I'm not sure it's easily replaced.
I'd love to keep him. Much more so than Smart. I believe AB is one of the better two-way players in the league. He gets better every year, never causes any problems and is close with IT. All good things. I think he'd be even more effective if he played fewer minutes as the third guard. He front-rimmed a lot of shots in the ECF and that usually means tired legs. He's also reportedly becoming more of a leader on the team and I think he's a great role model for the younger guys.
Right now we'd miss him more than Smart or Rozier.

I like AB a lot but Smart may end up giving us 75% of AB for a third the cost and that's the issue. AB isn't a max guy per se but he is maybe 2/3rds a max guy and we can't afford 3 maxes, 4 high picks AND AB AND Crowder

Yup. I like AB more than Smart, but I think Smart is the longterm answer because I think he's gonna be cheaper to keep around. The key is to sign guys to front loaded deals so that we can resign our BRK picks down the road. That's why signing someone like Hayward really complicates things.

I think Crowder is much more easily replaced than AB. Crowder is a good but not elite defender, and can hit open threes somewhat regularly but that's about it on offense. And Brown is going to eat his minutes soon anyway.
I think by the time Jaylen comes up for his first big contract, Horford's contract will be finished. And likewise, when Fultz comes up for his second contract there won't be much time left on IT's or AB's next contract. Maybe a year or two at most. And the second contract is not for huge money under the current CBA.
Will we get Hayward? Can Brown play SG at least part of the time? The fate of AB, IT and Smart may depend on these things, as well as whether Zizic fills the rebounding hole or do we need to trade a guard or two to upgrade the frontcourt.

Like you guys mentioned, Smart is cheaper and more versatile.
Smart can handle the Point (though pretty average), has the height to play SG, has the strength and toughness to play the 3 and 4 (though it's best not to play him there too often, due to massive height differential).
Avery is basically just an undersized 2 guard.

So, rather than lose him for nothing, we would be smart to move him for something of value.

Avery may be an undersized 2 guard, but paired with a guy like Fultz (6'4" with a 6'9" wingspan) who can guard SGs, AB could defend the other PG on D, and he doesn't seem to have any problem getting his shot off an offense, so his size wouldn't be as much of an issue as when paired with IT.
Plus, AB is just a better guy than Smart. No flopping, no groin punches. I know that's not what we're supposed to be valuing here, but I want good guys on my team.

Perimeter defense would take a hit. Also, I still believe Bradley is developing.

But that's the problem -- Avery is a good guy, a good player (but not great), and we're going to pay him a whole lot of money. If we continue this way of doing business, we're going to have an expensive roster of good, but not great players.

Perimeter defense would take a hit. Also, I still believe Bradley is developing. He did start to show more of a dribble penetration game, but this is where I see him needing to improve to reach the next level. He's got to be able to attack the basket more, and at will.

AB comes back better every year. He definitely needs to keep improving, but he knows that, and works at it. It seems he's been here forever, but he's only 26 and not even in his prime yet. I don't see him ever becoming an all-star, but I do think he can be one step below that. I don't know how that translates into dollars.
