That's what Ainge basically alluded to. We're not much different than the other teams in the east who are below the Cavs, such as TOR and WAS. They are up and coming, young enough to still get better and take the next step (though, TOR is looking like they're peaking).
Ainge has some serious stuff to decide on this summer because we've got some players on the team who are going to be up for a new contract, and it'll get expensive.
He knows we have to get better, but how much of this team can we keep intact and still take a sizeable step forward?

It reassuring that Ainge and Co. seem to have their eyes on the ultimate prize: banner 18. They know this core isn't going to bring them to the promised land. I'd be shocked if both Bradley and IT4 are on this team next year. One of those guys is getting flipped for young talent and/or picks.

Even Brad said in his interview after Game 5 that he knows not everyone will be back (though he said he expects most back). It's the nature of the business, and everyone knows that.
I don't know if Ainge is set on moving IT, but if he is, it has to be this summer. IT has a cheap contract for what he produces, it's an expiring contract so teams won't be gambling all that much (even if he doesn't re-sign), and he's playing at an All-NBA level.
I agree that we have a glut at the 1 & 2. We have IT, Bradley, Smart, Rozier and Fultz (if we draft him). Only Smart and Fultz are at least close to NBA average for a shooting guard. Not only do we have a glut, but a glut of undersized SG's (none of them are pure PG's).

And what if we are able to sign Hayward? Suddenly we could be a LOT bigger. With Fultz at PG, Jaylen at SG and Hayward at SF we are bigger at all three positions (not that JB is going to be a FT SG)
I don't think IT has to be traded this summer. Before the All-Star break would work too, I think. And I imagine DA wants to see how Fultz and IT play together.
I think we've seen the last of several guys, unless they are willing to play for minimum contracts. Zeller, Amir J, Young for sure. Jackson and Mickey are signed for short money (non-guaranteed) and could be kept to fill the roster out - though they won't play. Green if he'll take the vet minimum.
KO and Jerebko are the most interesting to me. Signing either or both will have to wait until Danny signs a big FA. And even then, KO may get offers that Danny doesn't want to match. I wouldn't go too high on him. Jereebko played for $5 million last year. If he's willing to take that again, he's a valuable bench guy who seems to rise to the occasion in the playoffs. But again, I think for cap purposes any extension will have to wait.
If we do get Hayward, I won't mind seeing Crowder traded. He's a solid BENCH player; not good enough to start for a title team. At some point Jaylen is going to eat his minutes anyway.
I just don't see where Smart fits on a title team. He can't penetrate and he can't shoot. This was his third season and he has been a historically bad shooter - who is not improving. His form has gotten better but not his results.
Danny should trade both Smart and Crowder to some team in need of toughness. I understand the concerns about losing both, but I think we have plenty of toughness left. IT, Rozier and AB are all tough. Brown isn't afraid of anyone. Zizic has a mean streak. We'll be all right there.
If the ECF showed us anything it's that's we need a talent upgrade. Good players who play with heart and toughness are nice, but great players win playoff series. Right now we have one (marginally) great player in IT. We may have another coming on board in Fultz, and possibly another (at least very good) player in free agency. We can't afford to fall in love with anyone else on the roster.

Dennis Green: they are who we thought they were.
Regular season, BOS has overachieved for years. Playoffs, about right. When you are a team that is better together than the sum of its parts, there is not much room for error.

I'm hoping to keep Jae. He's a very versatile player and is terrific on defense. He was very efficient on offense for much of the season and he is on a very affordable contract. He'd be great off the bench if we upgrade at small forward. He can also play power forward very nicely in a small ball lineup. I'd rather keep him.
I'd like to keep Kelly too, but being a restricted free agent, any team can match our offer. I can see a team offering more than the Celtics can give him and offering a starting spot to lure him away. He'd have to decide that he wants to be in Boston and take less to stay here. That's just my opinion though.

That's just my opinion though. Jae can be this generation's James Posey -- a key bench player who defends, and hits big threes. I'd be surprised if Olynyk gets offered anything good from other teams, and that's because I've been disappointed with his overall body of work. He could have been the player that Kevin Love is for CLE (not the Love in MIN), but his production is so hot and cold. I've just about given up hope that he'll become a consistent performer.

That's it in a nutshell. Who is going to pay big money for someone who really brings it a couple times per year?

Much more than that and I'd let him go.

I'd be happy to keep him at around 9 mil also.

Kelly is one of those guys who is too nice to be as aggressive as you need to be to excel day in and day out in the NBA. If he could play with the same intensity as he did in Game 7 vs WASH he'd be having a very different career.

Yup, the MLE makes a big jump next year. I think rookie deals and vet min deals will be making a big jump in the next year or two as well.
