Everyone has something to say about Carmelo Anthony. He's a ballhog, a chucker, a blackhole, selfish, doesn't make teammates better, not a winner, a negative presence, his salary is atrocious, etc.
But even with that heap of negativity, word came out that our coaching staff was in favor of trading for him.
That screams to me that the coaches know we need scoring help.

I wonder who we would have had to give up.

I wonder who we would have had to give up. That's a huge question. But I'm just as curious to pick the brains of our coaches as to why they think Melo could be a good fit on this team.

Coaches probably always think they can get through to a guy, and he does have talent. If the price were cheap enough I can see how it might be tempting. If there is anything to this story, Danny must have decided that Carmelo wasn't worth the cap hit. Maybe it would have precluded going after a big name this summer.

I'm pretty sure that Danny has other players in mind, who he is targetting, ahead of Carmelo. You know, the usual suspects -- Hayward, Paul George, Jimmy Butler, etc. Once those possibilities have been explored, and if those doors have closed, maybe that's when Ainge goes after Melo.
We'd have to get rid of lots of players to acquire him. All the names we've heard thus far, like Amir, Zeller, Olynyk, Jerebko, Gerald Green, James Young are the ones we'd have to say bye bye to. Then we'd have to trade Jae Crowder (whom Phil Jackson has liked), probably a young talent with good upside, and of course draft picks.
Jae Crowder becomes expendable if Melo comes here because they essentially play the same positions (3/4), though Jae is the better defender, while Melo is the superior scorer. We'll need Jaylen Brown to develop real quick to cover the loss of Crowder.
The other players are all expendable. We're hoping that once the young players like Zizic, Yabusele and Nader settle down to the speed and physicality of the NBA, they'll be better than the backup role players we have now.

No no no... I don't want Melo. I hope Danny keeps putting his foot down and says no. We need scoring but not Melo. He brings too much baggage with him.

Let Doc and the Clippers trade glass Griffen for Melonie as we don't need to be in on either of those guys. I wouldn't be surprised if that is how LA gets CP3 to stay in LA is to trade Blake for one of his buddies in Melonie and Phil is dumb enough to pay Blake a max contract. After that I wouldn't be surprised if both Wade and LeFlop took 1 year deals in LA since they are all buddies who want to play on the same team with Melonine and CP3.

That's the point I want to emphasize. Not many Celtics fans, it seems, want Melo. But the coaching staff do.
Do they see something we don't? Are they optimistic about something?

Melo is probably not as toxic as fans make him out to be. If he was on a balanced, good team - would he learn to defer? Cause if he did and put some effort on D, he'd be deadly to have. Problem is, he's never shown he can be a true team player, but players change as they continue to lose and get older. Still, I'd rather have the flexibility we have now than an aging Melo as we don't need to force the window for a championship when we got a nice future laid out.

Imagine what a rejuvenated Melo might do if he buys into a team first, "play all out attitude"? But still, his contract is massive. Melo is not the type of player who alone tips the scale and turns us into a true contender.
