Not sure if you guys saw, but last night the Garden crowd cheered for Gordon Hayward in the introductions. Afterwards Crowder tweeted that he felt disrespected and called out the fans for cheering for the opponent. Some fans disrespected him even more on twitter for calling out the fans for disrespecting him, if that makes sense, and he responded with a few snarky comments, which he later deleted and also expressed remorse for responding that way.
I think Hayward and Crowder are very comparable. Hayward may be a bit better on offense but Crowder better on defense and Crowder is more versatile in that he is stronger and can play the 4 better. Hayward is averaging more points but Crowder is more efficient
Crowder: 48.8% FG, 43% 3P, 87.9% FG
Hayward: 45.3% FG, 36.5% 3P, 87.9% FT
Hayward takes 15.9 FG per game while Crowder takes 9.4 FG per game. So, if Crowder took as many shots as Hayward, their point totals might be similar. Perhaps Crowder isn't scoring more because he draws the assignment of guarding the opponent's best scorers almost every game and does a good job of limiting them. Hayward is nowhere near as good on defense as Crowder.
For me, I'd rather have Crowder. His passion and intensity sets the tone for this team night in and night out.
He's the better defender and is more efficient and more versatile. He's also at a bargain price compared
to what Hayward is going to ask for. The biggest need for this team right now is a big who can defend the rim and rebound. Zizic is a good candidate at this point. If we are going to sign a max player, I'd go for a big dominant center, not a player who plays a position we already have 2 very good players - Brown and Crowder.
If we add another scorer, I'd rather someone who wouldn't mind coming off the bench in the 6th man role and who
wouldn't demand a max contract or anywhere near it. I would like to keep IT and Avery and they will need to be paid. If we don't pay them someone else will and they will come back to haunt us.
Brown is going to get better as will Crowder, Smart, and AB, who have improved every season so far. We have a couple of lottery picks that will be valuable for drafting a future star or as a trade asset. I'd rather keep the defensive minded players that we have and go for a scorer who isn't a max player. Defense wins championships. I like where the Celtics are and where they are heading and Crowder is one of my favorite players.
I have to think that Larry Bird would have reacted negatively to the Garden fans cheering an opponent as well. I remember him speaking out against Isaiah and Magic with their pregame hugs and he didn't believe in giving opponents any love during a game. I think he'd love Crowder's intensity and fire.
