Avery did phenomenal in the 2nd unit against other 2nd unit guys. He's not a starting sg. He's definitely not a starting pg. He's a combo guard that backs up at both spots and is a really good defender.
I don't think right now is a great time to start Evan T. I think now is a good time to start Rozier, and to maybe give more time to RJ Hunter.
We were essentially told Rozier was a slightly smaller version of Smart. I want to see it.

So if you look at Avery's stats he's having his best year.
He has been playing 28+ mins/game since the 2012-13 season, meaning this is his 4th year doing that.
His minutes are actually down slightly from the last two years, but he has (barely) a career high average in points and assists. He has a career low in fouls (since 2012-13...everything I am saying is since then. I'm not counting his first two years. I'm counting the years he was a solid rotational guy), and kept his TOs steady. He also is averaging a career high in steals and his rebs are staying steady at what they were last year, despite playing less minutes than last year.
The major reason for his excellent play is a career high in fg% and a super career high in 3pt fg% (although he has dipped a good deal in FT%). That means this is as good as it gets for Avery. He has largely peaked and I think the reason is that he has been moved to the 6th man role that he is excellent in. He gets to come in and crush the other team's 2nd unit with his smothering defense and keeps the offense going.
They need to keep him there. He is not a starting sg, and certainly not a starting pg. He is a combo guard 6th man defensive specialist extraordinaire, who get's paid reasonably. He's kinda Tony Allen when Tony was close to his best.
He's the kind of player every coach would love and would want.....playing a leading role in the 2nd unit.

I'm not sure what to think of how Avery should be used. That'll be one of the biggest challenges for CBS this year. Getting maximum contributions from our backcourt will be huge.

Tonight against the Hawks is a great example of why he shouldn't be a starter. He's absolutely lighting it up but nobody is because he can't facilitate. He has almost no other stats but scoring. If you are relying on Bradley to win you the game with scoring you got issues. It doesn't work that way. He's not Jordan Clarkson or Oladipo. He's not Lebron with all the passing. He's not a point forward like Scottie Pippin or even Larry Bird. He's just a defender/scorer. That's 2nd string

The other value of Avery coming off the bench is Marcus starting, and I think we saw the value of that last night. Marcus' defense adds a major element to a game. When Avery was helping the team close the gap last night there was nobody to hand the baton to, but you gotta do that in the nba
