Just doing this on the fly but these are some valid reasons why we should keep Rondo imo minus the obvious that he's our best player and a top player in the league.
1. Paying Rondo top billing is not the end of the world. No team has ever been good that hasn't had to pay someone. Rondo's contract is up at an appropriate time. Ownership has money to spend. Pairing Rondo with a young talented nucleus is a legitament option and actually makes a lot of sense. Most of our players are signed and not due for a big pay day any time soon.
2. Signing Rondo we still have room to add additional talent and the ability to make trades to get additional talent here
3. Marcus Smart has the ability to be a pg in the future but to me he is more of a basketball player. He isn't a true pg. He doesn't have the ball handling ability or passing ability or ability to create like Rondo does. That's not a knock on Smart either. I think Smart ultimately can be the leader this team needs from the pg spot, but he still offers different things. Either way Smart is 20 years old. He's very young. There is no rush to trade Rondo in that regard. Having Smart prove it will be good for him anyways.
4. Dual prong pg attacks work in the nba. A lot of teams actually want this. Rondo is a different player than Smart. Rondo is more of a catalyst. Smart brings other things to the table.
5. All indications point to the fact that Rondo isn't the drama queen that people make him out to be. He appears to be loyal and is allowing the Celtics to do their due diligence.
6. Rondo wants to win. He doesn't want to wait around for it either. He wants to win now and that is part of his frustration
7. A mix in the nba is the way to go Anything is possible and I'd never say you can't do this or that or build an all young team and nucleus. But even the spurs had David Robinson when they got Tim Duncan. They were paying Robinson his due and still drafted and had a young nucleus. Rationally ainge is still going to find the best option, but it seems pretty plausible we can pay rondo and still have the ability to add talent and pay our young talent as well and find that mix. Ultimately to win championships the goal usually is to have a mix of veterans with young talent around them though.
8. Marcus Smart can shoot. He has to work on his shooting and become a better shooter but he has that ability. He has shown the ability to play off the ball and actually thrives at it.
9. I've read things where the Celtics may want a guy to give the team some stability vs going into a full out rebuild and Rondo may be the best guy to be that. Ainge has said he doesn't see it as building around guys and treats each player for who they are and I agree. But having Rondo as that is a legitament option if he buys into what the Celtics are doing and becomes a leader.
10. Do we really want to be Cleveland after they lost LeBron? Cleveland got LeBron back but I still remember that playoff series a few years ago where Rondo was the best player there when guys like Lebron, Dwade, Pierce and KG, Chris Bosh and Ray Allen were on the floor. DA has a lot of draft picks and I trust DA build a team regardless. But Cleveland had the top pick several years and it lead to them getting Lebron back. DA could probably do better than that but even still. These young kids are somewhat overhyped. IF DA could build a great team minus Lebron why can't he build a great team with Rondo?
Ultimately I don't think it's so much about finding the right deal either. It's more a decision the Celtics need to make what fits best and there is no rush to trade Rondo in that regard. There are still reasons to keep him. Even if a good deal comes along it still comes down to weighing those options and trying to find the best solution. I still think that's up in the air and 50/50 and anyone who has made that decision already isn't thinking it through. It's still very possible Rondo remains right here. Finding a better solution isn't necessarily the case. Rondo still has as much a chance to be that.
It's still the process of it and Rondo is a celtic for now and that decision hasn't been made.
