A lot of talk but nothing has happened of late so I thought I'd lay out where I stand. I personally would not trade any of these guys
West
Allen
Reed
Green
Gomes
Jefferson
Perkins
That is the C's young core imo and I want to let it play out before we do anything there. That's only 7 players though and some of those guys may not even contribute this year, although I think most will in some capacity. That opens the door for 7 additional roster spots plus whatever we do with the NBDL.
Currently we have 7 other players that could potentially fill those spots that have been here, are under contract, or are supposed to be here soon.
Pierce
Walker
Banks
RAef
Blount
Davis
Scalabrine
-Scalabrine if signed will not be able to be traded so that ultimately gives us 8.
-I don't see Ainge dealing DAvis. I would never be surprised if something happened, he holds very good value but Im not sure what we have to gain by dealing. He seems to be stepping up as a leader and this team is going to need some veteran leadership and someone to go to on and off the court when things get tough. Davis has a good contract, is young, and could be that guy.
That gives the C's 9 players pretty much locked in. 1 PG(West), 3 sg/sf's(Allen, Ricky, Green), 2 SF/PF's(Gomes, Reed), 2 PF's(JEfferson, Scalabrine), and 1 Center(Perkins). That lineup is very inexperienced imo so I would surround it accordingly. Ainge is going to have 3 pg's on the roster ultimately. He is going to have 3 Centers. That's 13. Pierce, Blount, Raef, BAnks are all under contract which also gives us 13. We need another pg regardless to give us 14. The question is what kind of pg do we need? Can we upgrade the Center position in the process? Can we sign a pg outright and what in comparison can we get back in a trade.
Option 1 - Pierce for a PG/Center? SG/SF is crowded with youth which might edge Pierce out the door eventually but Im not sure Im there. Plus the pg this team needs is still dependant on how good West is? Same goes for Perk at Center. We don't need to trade Pierce to get a backup pg if West is starting. Although quality wise trading pierce would probably net the best results in a trade. Im not even sure if West is our pg yet.
Option 2- It may make sense to deal RAef or Blount if we can unload salary, and get back decent filler. We do need to surround Perk and Jefferson with guys that can take some of the pressure off though, and Raef nad Blount can do that albeit overpriced. I see these guys as more of a package with someone else to A. dump salary and B. upgrade the pg and Center spot in the process.
Option 3- The most likely guy to be traded is Banks imo. I would probably be looking to deal Banks along with cap and sign someone like Dickau. This roster doesn't need a whole lot as it stands outside of getting another pg in here.
Option 4-Walker sign and trade. Walker could potentially be packaged with any of the above to get what we need, or brought back to fill a void if Blount or Raef is dealt.
Option 5- We could also potentially just keep BAnks, keep the roster as is, let walker walk, sign a fa pg and be done with it. SEnd Coppenrath and Bynum to the NBDL.
Ainge is going to be looking to open up more time for Perk and Jefferson this season. Trading either Blount, RAef or Walker would accomplish that. Why I think 1 of the 3 will not ultimately be here. That way we keep some veteran leadership there while allowing those guys mroe time. With the signing of Scalabrine we could potentially make over the entire front line, although that seems unlikely. Why I think Ainge will try to deal one of those 3 along with Banks to upgrade the pg position. That would open up more time for Jefferson and Perk plus help solidify a position of need. Next offseason we will look to clear out the shooting guard/sf glut once all these young guys are more seasoned, unless something drastic happens and Pierce decides he doesn't want to be a part of this any more.
