Sepultura without max is like frosted flakes without the milk. I got tired of them fast when they didn't have max. If you want a band with good riffs, check out clutch. They are grunge. I like to think of them as the modern day Iron Butterfly. If you like IB, I think you'd dig clutch. I recommend songs like big news, escape from the prison planet, wishbone. Check em out. As far as metal goes, here are my bands currently:
Machinehead Sevendust Skinlab Slipknot Unleashed Shadows Fall Soulfly Pro Pain Earth Crisis (HC/Metal) Vision of disorder (HC/Metal) Madball (HC/Metal) Fear Factory (obsolete, digimortal) Nonpoint Ill Nino Pantera
Grunge:
Clutch COC (Corrosion Of Conformity) Sam Black Church Mudhoney (nirvana era) Sonic Youth Nirvana (incesticide, unplugged) Soundgarden

You know of Unleashed? They're from Belgium I believe. On old seattle grunge, that made me want to go to seattle all the more plus I routed for seattle in the west nearly each yr. Nirvana is not really near my favorite though. I just like a few cds. Soundgarden though, some may hate them but they defined a lot. The memory is on me like nothing else. Down on the upside was a brand new album when the sonics made the finals in 96. Chris Cornell was in the front row too. Oh, I also forgot Pearl Jam on that list. My favorite Pearl Jam cd's in order consist of these:
1, Ten/s/t (tough call) 2, No Code 3, Vitalogy 4, Yield and everything else

When Ten came out, times were much cooler than they are now too. I found 1992 to be a great year opposed to now. Too many bands are changing nowadays to fit in with these times. Janes Addiction no longer sounds similar either. Helmet totally went downhill with their new cd.

for me personally the beginning of nineties, even the end of eighties was the time of awakening musically. i guess i felt the same as the rock'n'roll fans in the sixties.
you're right about the old bands trying to be modern. they suck and are stuck forever in mediocrity

Yea, its like they change for the worse. Metallicas a prime example. Even for bands that weren't out in the early early 90's, Incubus's S C I E N C E cd was real good compared to their last one. The red hot chili peppers are still good. Def Leppard on their newer album didn't change so young kids could appeal to them but they were still different on "X" than any other cd. They were softer if anything. The songs were not as energetic as pour some sugar on me or nothing.

Lot of people hate everything Metallica has done since the Black album (many hardcore fans hate the Black album actually). I really like Load and Reload, but agree that St. Anger sucks. King Nothing, Until it Sleeps, Hero of the Day and especially Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are really solid songs that I listen to for hours. Some of those songs I'd even rival up against No Remorse, Hit the Lights, and Horsemen. I think people instantly hated the albums just because it wasn't the old Metallica sound without really giving it a try.

I was more accepting of the black album than load and reload. I didnt care for And Justice for all. That got redundant. Load was ok. Reload sucked. Garage Days was good. My favorite Metallica album: Ride The Lightning #2,Master of Puppets/Kill Em all #3, Garage Days Revisited #4 Black album #5,Load #6 AJFA #7,Reload
#8 anything else newer than reload

I love Justice simply for the sheer metal it was. That album was Metallica's version of technical metal, as in precision and complexity. I love the sound of the guitars on that album (first time they switched over to EMG pickups, which are really great, I must say--own them myself), but Lars' drum sound is pathetic.
I also like the heavy sound of the guitars on Master. James must have layered his guitars a million times because the sound is so thick. I love it.

i think "...justice" was one of the peaks of metal alltogether. one of the most technical albums ever. alla the other bands and players used to learn by playing metallica's riffs (sepultura's arise was the other album simila like that technically). personally i've never called myself a metallica fan but i sure respect what they did for the music. i like some of the songs you mentioned from the "load" derren but i think that was the album when they had lost their perspective and it has gone downhill ever since. last album only had a couple of good songs and some other riffs. as a drummer i have to voice my opinion that they have probably the worst drum sound in music history on that one. "puppets" was my personal favourite from them
