Had a nice stat line for his very first starting gig of his career (9 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assists, 25 minutes).
By far, the best passing PG we have on the team, even if he's just a rookie and a late second round pick. This kid has court vision and the daringness to make difficult passes. And the difficult passes look easy for him. Another thing Orien displayed tonight is his impersonation of Tony Allen. On a couple of occassions, he came out of nowhere to get his hands on tip ins after missed shots (he converted one, and barely missed on another attempt). The guy can get off the ground quickly and sky in with tremendous momentum.
One thing I worry about though (and this has nothing to do with Orien's inabilities), I don't know if our players can fit in with Orien. With PG's who look to pass and thread the needle, teammates need to be constantly moving to get open, slashing through the backdoor, making hard cuts to the basket, and running after picks. No matter how good a PG is, if his teammates are not doing their part to give him a scoring target to pass to, they won't be as effective as they should be. Take for instance Jason Kidd who has Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson always running with him--if they just stand around and wait for Kidd to kick the ball out to them behind the arc, what good is that? Watch Shawn Marion weave his way to get open for Steve Nash to find him near the basket, or Amare Stoudemire cut hard to the basket after he picks for Nash. A PG can only do so much by himself. His teammates need to do their part and give him targets to pass to. Can you imagine the Lakers team if Byron Scott, AC Green, James Worthy, and Kareem all stood around the perimeter, asking Magic to do his thing with no one moving?
Orien can be much more creative than he is being allowed to show right now. He's a guy who should have the ball in his hands longer than anyone else because he can create easy shots for our guys instead of relying on them trying to create shots for themselves.
But it doesn't seem to be a pefect match right now. Ricky and Pierce are fantastic scorers, but they normally get their points off of shots they create for themselves (Ricky with his killer pull up jumper and Pierce with his step back jumper). I was watching them tonight and seeing how they play with Orien, and they didn't seem too enthused to make cuts to get open so that Orien can find them. Ricky does his curl to get open for jumpers, but I felt that there were other ways in which he could have worked better with Orien setting him up. Raef just hangs around the perimeter and Blount doesn't follow the PG after he makes a pick.
Guys who I do think will work well with Orien are Tony Allen, Al Jefferson, and Ryan Gomes. All 3 of them instinctively move toward the ball and seem to find open holes on the court. They are guys who follow the PG into the lane after the pick, or cut hard to the basket when they see Orien penetrating to the basket.
