Point is this was the biggest game of the year and a must win and Sheed had his best game so far and came through when it mattered. Lebron can have his most valuable player trophy. We can have the win in your building. There's a reason why the celtics get overlooked as far as personal accolades all the time, but win 8 championships in a row.

I'm really happy with the win and at the same time disgusted at what it took to win..we had to basically shoot the lights out because of the refs being so unfair to us. The foul discrepancy was ridiculous..they shot double our free throws, we got called for double the fouls...and if it weren't for the hot hands, they would have gotten the better of us. Terrible officiating once again.

they dont want us playing defense. the nba is geared towards offense and their stars. you are right. we do need to shoot the lights out to win. the thing is the nba the way it used to be was different. Bill Russell contested so many shots and was allowed to play defense. They don't let you do that anymore. Russell would have had to change up his game in todays day and age. I understand it's for marketing purposes. But defense is just as exciting to me. MLB did the same crap with the homeruns. They destroyed teh game and made it a homerun fest and took away other parts of the game that are just as exciting if not moreso. This is where money and greed hurts the integrity of the game. When the commishioner is the guy touting this stuff that's a problem. It is a business. But i'm more about the game itself. Players don't need to be making 20 million a year imo. It's been progressively getting worse and worse and the greedy people are winning out. That sucks.
You do literally need to shoot the lights out. That's what they want. Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships. That's at least what they think. Me personally I'd rather watch defense. That kind of stuff turns me off. The game was built on good team play and defense. I'm a fan of the nba because of those great teams like the celtics in the 60's etc. Some of these people can't tell their (censored) from their elbow. If they just called the game straight and made it the best possible game it would sell better. You have these overglorified players that are overhyped on teams paying these players tons of money that aren't selling tickets. Boston on the other hand sells out every game because they play a good brand of basketball.

There's a reason why the celtics get overlooked as far as personal accolades all the time, but win 8 championships in a row. Two be fair, the Celts have dominated the MVP award over the years. From 1956 to 1985, 10 of the 30 MVP trophies given out were to guys in Celtics jerseys.

that's true. But if you ask the average fan who's better Michael Jordan or Bill Russell everyone knows who Jordan is. A lot of people don't know who bill russell is.
Russell was probably one of the meanest basketball players and most competitive guys on the court, but he was also unassuming in ways.
Bill Russell wasn't about shoes and sportscenter.
I'm not saying Jordan isn't ultra competitive either. he has his own way. I'm not saing he was shallow by any means. He was obsessed in his own way. He was a great player in his own right. Just different. The same goes for the Tiger Woods, Lebrons and A-rods of the world.
Even if russell played today he would have his marketing stuff, but he would keep it to a minimum. KG, Pierce do that for the most part. KG could be a media pimp but he's not. Different personalities and values.
KG is a bit of a drama queen but he's also not. His whole anything is possible thing. That was a bti over the top. It was real.

Haha any time a guy shouts something pretty close to the slogan for the tennis shoe company that he endorses, you've gotta question the sincerity of it. But hey, if he was able to make a little extra money for it, more power to him. It's a business.

At least he didn't say just do it? Shaq can be like that too. KG and Shaq have similarities. It's more in jest though. I don't think KG ever takes himself that seriously. KG's antics make me laugh more times than not. He is probably laughing to himself half the time. It's liek a release to him.
On point though, Russell was probably just as good a defensive player as Jordan was an offensive player. Russell was probably as good an offensive player as jordan was on defense. Both guys played both ends of the court but Russell reminded us that defense is a huge part of the game. In todays game though Russell would have to change things up though, where guys like Jordan are being catered to. Which tells me the game is more geared towards offense and isn't really fair. I think Russell could play in todays game and be just as great but he would have to play differently. Jordan greatest offensive player ever. Russell greatest defenseive player ever though. Both were great on opposite sides of the spectrum as well.
But yeah it's a business. I'm not saying i don't understand or there is anythign wrong with that in theory. Stern isn't a stupid person. He was born in new york city and is about capitalism in its truest form. He's a great business man and has marketed the league. I just more just dont want certain aspects of the game to be completely lost. But there are great players from all walks of life in the game that have a say as to how the game is to be played. It's still a great game. We still were able to win a championship and got that recognition.
I totally understand why heinsohn is completely relentless with the officials though. Because he's a celtic, and it's in their best interest. If the celtics are going to be able to win, they need to be allowed to play defense and team basketball and be allowed to set screens they rely on getting charge calls, etc, because they don't have the offensive superstars and lebrons of the world. Those types of players tend to trend to the larger markets. Boston is a huge market but it's not like NY, Chicago, or LA or even Miami in that regard. We tend to attract a different style of player. We are trying to beat Lebron. Guys like Lebron and Wilt rely more on their physical ability to be able to single handedly take over a game. Not that Rondo is anything to shake a stick at in that regard. He is his own physical beast, but we are more team oriented and rely on having several guys that can play together.

Rondo is our best player btw. He's become that this year.
And to t hink he doesn't even have a max contract and is signed for a while. DA was great with those negotiations. Talk about a cornerstone player.

Talk about a cornerstone player. Yeah DA was real smart about it. Even though Rondo averaged a near triple double in the previous playoffs, DA held out and that was before Rondo truly broke out and went crazy the whole year becoming the league's steal leader and one of the top assist guys. With Lebron, Shaq, Mo Williams etc all heaping praises on Rondo, he could have very well attracted a much bigger deal with some other team in the off season..Heck he is one of a kind...places like Dallas who have Kidd already whose basically a far older version of Rondo with a 3 point shot thats abit better but Rondo is better at defense, speed, penetration and FG%, would definitely seek to add a guy like Rondo to replace Kidd. Or heck even a place like LA..Dunno if Rondo would go there but Fisher is getting old and hes overpaid...They'd pay for a guy like Rondo. Now if only we can lock up some of our vets for less money and still manage to bring in some help next year...Once Quisy leaves, we cant just have TA as our only backup for Ray and PP. Same with Nate..we'll have to find a replacement when he leaves.

Good strong road win -- now we have to come out strong in games 3 and 4. Let's not forget Cleveland is also a strong road team. But it was awesome to see us respond to their 15-0 run with an 11-3 run of our own, whereas earlier in the year, we were more than likely to fold. They turned on the jets, and we matched that intensity and prevailed in a difficult place to win (only their 2nd loss in the last 15 playoff games in Cleveland).

Russell was probably as good an offensive player as jordan was on defense. I gotta disagree with that. Russell was an average to slightly above average defensive player. Jordan was a HOF level perimeter defender. Dude was all NBA defense multiple times. I believe he even won a defensive POY in the late 80s. One of the reason the Bulls were so insanely good was that in Jordan and Pippen they had two of the greatest defensive swingmen ever. It would be interesting to see what kind of player Russell would've been in today's game. My guess is he would've put up around 17/16/4 for most of his career. But with a guy like Russell, it's tough to judge him with stats. He would've been a perfect anchor for a team like the Suns. Dude was an all-universe defensive fiend, and he was incredibly unselfish.

Russell was underrated offensively. He was a consumate team player and understood the game incredibly well. We would run the floor like no other big man and find his spots. He also was an excellent passer.
Jordan may have been all world defensively but i'm sorry a guard can not have the same impact on a game defensively as the best defensive center ever.
So yes i think Russell was as good offensively as Jordan was defensively and vice versa. I think having Russell on defense had just as much effect as jordan on offense. I think Russell on offense had just as much effect as jordan on defense in other words.
IMO if they played head to head. I think Russell would win because great defense beats great offense imo. Those celtics teams were great offensively anyways.. The bulls teams were great defensively as well. But pick your poison.
I think they are the two best players ever.
No offense to Larry and Magic. I think an argument can be made for them as well for different reasons. Larry was a better shooter than all of them and was great in every facet as well. Great passer etc... Magic was the best passer ever and great in every facet. Rebounding, scoring etc... We are basically talking about the best defensive player(Russell), best scorer(Jordan), best shooter(Bird), and best passer(Magic) of all time who were great in every facet of the game as well. But they were all the greatest in one area.
