The only thing that saves doc is if we land oden or durant. I'm not in favor of this move. I have serious concerns about our ownership. I understand there were injuries, but i dont consider rivers a good in game coach. May 22 will decide rivers long term future as celtics coach IMO.

Well, I can't say that I'm happy with the contract extenstion, but I will have to go by faith that Ainge and the owners know what's good for the team.
Lets look at some of the positives that Doc has going his way.
-the young guys do seem to play hard for Doc, and they have vouched for him to return
Anyone want to add anything else?

The Herald is saying that it is 1 year at $5 million. With an option for a second year. celtics.bostonherald.com/celtics/view.bg?articleid=1000542My only hope is that Doc will get the Better Basketball tapes or something like that and improve as a coach. The players come back better every year, maybe Doc will. If he doesn't and we still don't improve our defense, I wouldn't bet on him coaching out the extension.

Good, its not a long term contract. Doc hasn't proved that he is worthy of being here long term.

news like this make it a sad day for the celtic nation. the only glimmer of hope is that it's only for one year. and i feel bad for gerald green as he won't play the next two years as much as we'd like

I dont mind a one year extension. At least it settles things for the time being.

Here's to hoping that Doc turns into the coach we want him to be, and need him to be. A coach who gets our team to become a solid defensive unit, a coach who gets this team to become an uptempo unit, a coach who utilizes the strengths of his players, and a coach who brings out the best in his players.
He's got one year to turn things around ;D

Maybe there is something I am missing here. Why was Doc Rivers brought back? Oh, well I hope he can turn the team around and be good enough to coach the team back to the NBA finals in 2008. Then again, I hope I inherit 10 million dollars and I can quit working, too.

This quote from the ESPN article on Doc's extension kind of struck me: sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2866831Very interesting quote from Danny to say the least! Doc did a good job? On what? On tanking the season maybe? Give him a real opportunity and chance to coach? What were the last 3 years if they weren't a real opportunity and chance to coach? An extra $5 mill is a pretty good reward for tanking the season and taking one for the team. It will be interesting to see what happens. Will Doc suddenly learn how to coach? Will he get fired if he doesn't and smile all the way to the bank as he leaves?

I think Danny is saying give him a REAL opportunity to do well and coach this team without all of the many injuries.

I don't understand why there was aparently an option for both sides. I don't see what the point of that is at all. I assume that nearly guarantees he's here for two years unless we pay him to not coach, which I hate.

I think Danny is saying give him a REAL opportunity to do well and coach this team without all of the many injuries. I would say that when a coach has injuries on the team, that is the REAL opportunity to show how good a coach he is. Every coach in this league was hit by injuries. There were only a handful that didn't lose their star player for at least part of the season. Miami was without Shaq and or Wade for much of the season and yet they didn't fall into the lottery. Granted they didn't get far in the playoffs but at least they made it. Rick Carlisle lost much of his team to injuries and suspensions from the infamous brawl and still got them into the playoffs. The Warriors were hit with injuries. Baron was out 18 games and they traded half of their team mid season and look what Nellie has done. We give Doc excuse after excuse but the truth is, if he was a good coach he would have done a better job with the players he had. The truth is that his system is all offense and no defense. He doesn't use players to their strengths. Bigs are lost in his system. PGs are jerked around and don't get to run the team.

if he was a good coach he would have done a better job with the players he had. That's the key part of the sentance. These other teams you mentioned, they were full of veterans that know how to win. The Celtics were trowing out an AAU team every night. Like I've said before, there is no coach in the league that could've gotten this team to win.

When was the last time we saw Phil Jackson or Larry Brown coaching like 5 teens and 3 NBDL guys?
