NBA TV is reporting that former Celtic great Dennis Johnson has passed away of a heart attack at the age of 52. DJ was the coach of the Celtics D-League affiliate. It is very sad that DJ wasn't inducted into the Hall of Fame before he passed away as he very much deserved it. And this dark season marches on.

Yeah, My college buddy just called me up at work to tell me that. Yes, this is proving to be a dark season with all the passings and the injuries and the poor play of our team.
This is nuclear winter.

I guess I had a pretty good life. If i weren't married with a kid on the way I would just go to a Marine recruiting station and be like "hey can I sign up for two years, and you have me on the streets of Baghdad next week?" I'm not trying to say I have a death wish or want to hurt people, just that i respect the soldiers and wish I could be somewhere else sometimes doing something that mattered.

About Dennis.
He was a great team player and from reports a great man. I was looking for him to be on the Celts bench again one day. If not the head coach, an assistant. I believe he has found the best place of all. He and Red can talk hoops and light up a nice cigar over the past life.
You will be missed 3.
All the best to DJ's family and friends...

Wow, this is a shocker. DJ was far too young. Lets offer our prayers for his family that they'll be comforted during their mourning for DJ.
This season has been eerie to say the least. If it so happens that we are able to land Oden and we start another great Celtics dynasty, we can all look back on this season and see that it was almost scripted. The loss of 2 Celtics greats; Red Auerbach and DJ, losing both Pierce and Wally for chunks of the season, Tony Allen going down with a season ending injury, and a myriad of other players missing time due to a variety of injuries, all culminating to one of the worst seasons in Celtics' history--resulting in acquiring Greg Oden, who turns out to be our missing piece to the puzzle.
Its almost fitting.
R.I.P. Dennis Johnson

I am saddened to hear the news. Its unfortunate DJ didn't receive his due credit when alive.

I will always remember DJ as a class act who put the team first and played the game the way it should be played. He could hit the clutch shot and take on the defensive assignment on the other team's top scorer. I pray for his family and wish him a fond reunion with Red.

I was watching the video tribute to DJ and watched the "there's a steal by Bird" part. You know, DJ never got the credit due for that play either. If it wasn't for his thinking ahead and cutting to the basket, that play never would have materialized. But what impressed me more than anything, was the fact that after he made that layup, he didn't celebrate, he immediately turned to defend the inbounds pass. There was still a second left and defending that pass was his first thought, not to celebrate like the rest of the Celtics were doing. That is a professional. I wrote a piece on Loy's after the Hall of Fame announcement about the travesty of his being left out. That is a crime that he wasn't elected when he could enjoy it. The biggest complement to Rajon Rondo was that he has the best hands on a PG since DJ. I have so many good memories of watching DJ play and even met him once when he played in Miami. A great player and a great person. I always hoped DJ would come back to Boston as a coach. I will miss him.

Now, there is a steal by Bird, underneath to DJ, lays it up and in. WHAT A PLAY BY BIRD.
Then there was that DJ at the buzzer to tie the 1985 Finals at 2 games a piece at the forum.
DJ made a game tying 3 for the Sonics on January 20, 1980 in Boston Garden as the Celtics lost on OT on Super Bowl Sunday Game of the week.
DJ was the best player Larry Bird ever played with.
My condolences to DJ's family, the surviving members of the Big 5, and of course Celtics nation as my green flag on the front lawn is at half-mast.

D J is what they called him. E nergy and defense is what he brought every N ight he left it all out on the court. N ew players of this generation rarely play with his I nstincts and S marts.
J ust a matter of time before he is elected into the hall. O nly has 3 championship rings and a H efty amount of awards and accolades including a N umber of defensive awards, and All-Star appearances. S hutting down Magic in 84' O r hitting a buzzer beater in 85'. Can't forget about his N asty cut to the basket after Bird stole the ball in 87'.
RIP # 3. You will be sorely missed.
