Is perkins at the bust stage? I mean can we say for certain he is going to be the 6'10" center that can be a starter and impact every contest? Honestly, I don't think he has adjusted to the jump from HS to the L. I don't think you can blame it on injury either. Maybe coaching?

I give Perkins credit for being a hard working young man, who has worked his tail off to get in top physical shape. But IMO, Perkins is not going to be our starting Center when we reach the upper level (conference and championship contenders). I was just about to comment on a similar thought before I read this thread.

I dont want to take anything away from his work ethic and his obvious desire to play the role of rebounder and shot blocking presense, but I agree I dont think he is going to be a part of our main goal which is 17, of course.

Well, I do think he'll be a part of our team that wins Banner 17. But I feel his eventual role will be as a backup Center, and a good one at that. I think Perkins can be one of the league's best backup Centers, and his value should go up significantly in this role. I honestly feel that Perkins is too limited in his abilities for him to be a starting Center. He's really good at playing physical, but he's not a complete basketball player.
Often, I judge how good a player is by looking at how he makes difficult plays look. Good players make difficult plays look routine. Perkins makes simple plays look difficult.
*Using this same outlook, Rajon Rondo is a better player than Telfair because Rajon makes things look so easy out there. Rajon is an extremely gifted athlete and some of the things he does makes me laugh in astonishment.*
This is not meant to bash Perkins. I just see him in a different role than most Perk fans, and I think he'll be better in this role.

Dude is playing hurt. I think AL has proven that we shouldnt judge players when they are playing hurt.

I'm not really concerned about Perk, I think we do need to replace the Kandiman though. Not that Kandi is playing poorly, he's actually playing quite well, but this is a position if any the C's need to improve talentwise. And that's not a knock on Perk either, like Fresh said he is playing hurt and still could be that guy for all we know, but we do need competition at this spot. I think it's way early to call Perk a bust, unless this plantar fasciitus becomes a lingering issue and ends his career early, I would actually go as far to say there is no way he is a bust.

I think he's a bust compared to what we wanted him to be but not compared to where he was drafted and the circumstances of his career, and now as much as I hate to admit it, it looks like maybe he and Delonte are injury prone, as much or more than AL. They still have shown more toughness, but not as much lately. When AL snags like 22 rebs while getting more than his fair share of defensive attention it's hard to call him soft.

Even from before, I just didn't see a high ceiling for Perkins. I viewed him as a solid defensive player and a sturdy positional rebounder when developed. I wouldn't call him a bust, though, cause I never expected great things from him (like I am from Jefferson and Green). I actually think he's coming along well.

I don't think that Perk is a bust at all. He is a very hard working kid who is going to get better. Over the summer he had the shoulder surgery and then the plantar fasciitis and up until this year he has had virtually no playing time. 19 minutes in his entire first season. Then 5 mpg his second season. He averaged 19 mpg last season mostly after Blount was traded and he was starting to come on and then the shoulder injury. He didn't really have the summer to prepare and then the foot injury. I believe he is going to be a solid center. He really hasn't had a chance yet.

If Perks really has plantar fas, it is a very aggraviting injury. Since I hace had that myself, I know how it feels. Imagine, every step you take, one foot aches constantly.

4 million for a back-up center is definitely a good price in this league. As long as Perk can come in for atleast 20 minutes a game giving us a defensive presents i think we'll be aight where he's playing right now. I'm not going to judge his productions right now especially having a foot injury.

Last year Perkins was beginning to establish himself with several double-digit rebounding games, then he seperated his shoulder and was never the same; then this year he develops plantar fascitis and rolls an ankle. Reminds me in a way of Allen and Jefferson last year - playing injured makes him look poorer than he is.
That being said, if we were to land Odom in the draft, then obviously he becomes the back-up. Whether we can ever win with Perkins as a starter depends on how well Green and Jefferson develop offensively; San Antonio won a championship with Nazr Muhammed as their starting center, and da bulls won with Luc Longley, so with enough surrounding talent, you can win with a lunch-pail, blue collar player at center.

Perk is doing fine. He is a good backup center in this league. He is being paid commesurate with has abilities. I was hoping against hope that Theo Ratliffe could hold down the starting Center job for two years to bring everything along. The Portland trade backfired very badly this year. We could use Raef LaFrentz right now.

We could use Raef LaFrentz right now. Losing that extra year off of Lafrentz contract is going to play a big part on resigning our kids. And what would having Lafrentz do? GIve us an extra 3-4 wins? And what would that do besides give us a worse draft pick? Besides, at this point, i dont think Lafrentz is that much better of a player than Olawakandi.

Odd that this thread comes along about when Perk puts up maybe gthe best half of his career. My hope is that he might become a Wes Unseld-type 5. And a Paul Silas kind of rebounder/scorer. There are lots of points to be had by a beast who gets offensive rebouonds and puts them in the bucket.
Is that as good as having......
No.
But you can add a lot of different numbers to get 17.
