FL has a piece on this on Loy's Place, but I thought we could also talk about it here. Mentioned that Danny has made a feeler offer for Stromile Swift, but that Memphis is pretty set on keeping him (forget him, Danny--go after Gasol).
Tony's name may be a hot topic, as he has been playing fantastic. Should he be used in trade talks, not necessarily for Stromile, but trade talks in general?
Here's how I'm feeling lately. We need to be more athletic and versatile. That's the name of the game nowadays. As much as possible, each and every player on the court should be more athletic and versatile than his counterpart. We need to have an advantage at every position if possible.
Jefferson is starting to edge his way past most of his counterparts, and that's why they need to send double and triple teams on him whenever he touches the ball. Our PF spot will be a safe spot in the future.
That's why I'm all for Gasol. He isn't a brute nor is he going to bully people over with his great strength and bulk. But he is quicker and more versatile than almost any of his counterparts, and if used properly (which I don't think he is in Memphis), he can be a more impactful player than what he's showing now. To have a formidable frontline of Gasol and Jefferson is going to wreak havoc on any team, and it'll open up the floor for everyone else on the team.
Gerald shows potential to be a big time player, and once he gets to that level, he'll be better than his counterparts. So he's a keeper as well.
Now, onto Tony--he's exceptionally athletic and slippery, but is he going to be better than his counterparts at SG? I think Tony's in a different situation. He's not really looked upon to be the future face of the franchise like Jefferson and Gerald are, and he's not being groomed to be the heir apparent to Pierce. But what he is is an exceptionally versatile wing player who can defend, slash, create his own offense, and even play some Point. And this is what makes him attractive.
