I saw a lot of good things against Cleveland. It's pretty clear that Green is the heir apparent to Pierce. I loved watching green last game coming off of screens and catching and shooting. As much as people question Doc, it's him that was calling those plays and has had Green practicing them, and they were utilizing Green in the right way. I really think we need a nickname for Gerald and I was thinking superman, because of how he flies in on rebounds and putbacks, it's almost like superman to the rescue. Either that or the heir apparent, because of his relationship with Pierce. Anyways, I also liked how Allen is coming along. He is kind of the darkhorse on this team, and I can see a really good tandem of him and Green shaping up. I liked that Doc went to him on the final play, even though he missed the free throw. Because of the game Green was having I'm sure a lot of people were calling for Gerald to get the ball including myself, but I said to my friend that Allen is having a nice game as well and can get to the basket, and might not be as expected, and that's what Doc did. That's kind of why I consider Allen a darkhorse because ultimately teams are going to key on Green while Allen is killing them. Green and Allen are going to be an awesome tandem offensively and defensively, just because of the way they compliment each other and do different things.
Anyways, Allen and Green aside, I just wanted to give my insight into Pierce and Wally. I think they are here for a reason and I think with those guys we can win sooner and later. I really like the idea of riding Pierce for a few more years and letting Allen and Green play and develop alongside him. Green is only 20 years old here. Pierce is 29 and in his prime. He has at least 6 years left and even if he plays out his entire career here, Green will only be 24-26 and entering his prime when Pierce is retiring. It's not like we can't get all these guys time. Wally only has a couple years left on his contract and he will be gone at the end of it. Green will be 22 then. I don't see what the rush is.
Delonte played very well last game as the starting pg and I think if he can stay healthy he is our best pg and should start. This is the same type of situation though. We have Telfair and Rondo. TElfair is 21 years old. Yeah ultimately he could beat out West and we could move West to another position but what is the rush? Telfair is playing well. He had some great shots rolling off of screens, but his defense really needs to improve. Doc is right in that regard. Telfair could not stop DAmon Jones, and Heinsohn was right that someone needed to get in his face.
Jefferson is developing very well. He has become a consistant force in the paint. He still takes some awkward inexperienced shots at times, and doesn't know how to deal with double teams as well as he could, but he has been our best player these past several games. Wherever you put Jefferson, PF or Center he is going to be great for the Celtics. Perk is back, and played pretty well. He still needs to calm down a bit. If he could just get a shot he can control consistantly, he could be a very consistant player for us. It's almost like he can't control his aggression sometimes and just throws the ball at the basket. He is also hesitant at times and thinks too much, and instead of powering it he will hesitate and try to finesse it. I still say give Perk a couple years and Perk and Jefferson will be our starting frontline. What is he 23? Gomes has kind of been lost in the shuffle of late, but I think that's a positive as well as a negative. Gomes is never going to be anything great but if he plays hard and is aggressive he can be a really good roleplayer that doesn't hurt us in any regard. Gomes is the type of guy that can come in and give us a good scoring game here and there, plus he is good for matchups. We face a team that is smaller Gomes starts, we want to go big we go with Perk. Scal has really impressed me of late. I don't mind Scal at all anymore. He is a good character guy, doesn't hurt us, plays hard and I think he is teaching the young players a lot on the court and behind the scenes. He gives the C's a good head on the court to tell guys what to do, plus he gives us a big guy that can stretch the defense a bit with the 3. Plus we have Powe here to battle with Gomes, Perk, and Scal for minutes. Maybe Powe will beat out Gomes or Scal and make Gomes or Scal expendable eventually.
Anyways this is the way I see it right now. When Pierce comes back I see a 10 man rotation.
STarters
Delonte
Allen
Pierce
Gomes
Jefferson
I see a bench team of
Telfair
Green
Wally
Scal
Perk
Powe, Rondo get spot minutes because they are the rookies...
I'd like to see more Perk with Jefferson in stretches, and ultimately I want Perk to start with Jefferson, but after that I see the lineup being pretty much set. In a couple years Wally walks and Green becomes the 6th man, getting 30 minutes a game, unless Green proves otherwise before then, and Wally is oft injured anyways so he might become that sooner than we think. We have a pretty good team and we can sit here and just let guys develop and beat each other out for spots, and Green is going to get time. That's ultimately what is going to make Green and Allen, and Telfair and Perk and Jefferson the better players. If Green deserves to start he needs to beat out Pierce or Allen. It's that simple and the way it should be imo, and he'll be a better player because of it, and it's not like he isn't gettign time and rotting here. Green isn't going to play that well every night, and if he does he will play every night. He still has a lot of work to do on various aspects of his game.
Anyways I guess the point is the C's are in great position to evaluate guys and play them when they play well, and bench them when they don't, and that is ultimately going to motivate these young players to play well and be at the top of their games every time they are on the floor. With all that said I don't think it's impossible that we don't trade Pierce, I just don't think the time is now per sey, although it could be. If the right deal comes along where we can trade Pierce and Gomes or Perk for a legit Center or a pg and really improve the talent on this team I'm sure Danny is all ears. The thing is this team is already pretty stockpiled with talent, but we can't even win games as of now. Once Green and Allen and all these players start to find there roles we will. I'd like to see Green and Wally provide the C's with solid scoring off the bench for starters. I'd like to see Allen continue to be aggressive and playing lock down defense. I'd like to see Jefferson get even better inside when Pierce comes back. I'd like to see the C's find a reliable pg they can count on every game. And just let Pierce do his thing and try to fit in and play off these guys. That would change the outcome of a lot of these games. We are just starting to find those things.
