My final thoughts on this game:
Celtics came up short tonight which perhaps serves us a lesson that you need to stay with it for the full 48 minutes in this league. Szerbiak had a terrible scoring game. They never got him developed. Perkins never reentered the game in the 4th qtr - another Doc River's blunder. I was glad to see Orien Green get major minutes tonight. Perhaps he needs to be in the rotation instead of Tony Allen.
This was a good indicator game for the Celtics. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to improve the Celtics and that work applies to everyone associated with the Celtics. The fans including myself, must layoff the players and coaches and lower our expectations to a sub .500 record and no playoffs until 2008. This will more than likely end Pierce's tenure in Boston. The team must reinvent itself around a new core of players - presumably Wally Szerbiak, D-West, Orien Greene, Scalabrine (perhaps), and obviously Perkins and Jefferson. Pierce is trying to win these games by himself, that much is obvious. He is not Larry Bird and never will be Larry Bird.
I still am puzzled by Doc Rivers coaching strategy and substitution patterns.
I just think this roster is going to turn over some more and we may be locked into perpetual rebuilding. Getting Szerbiak means we won't be resigning Pierce. So a trade has to happen and I have to hope LaFrentz moves with him.
Of course, next year, the roster may restabilize, Tony Allen may be rehabbed, Gerald Green may be ready, and Dwayne Jones miraculously becomes Bill Russell. And suddenly out of the blue, the Celtics are back in contention. You just never know in this business. This year, the Clippers, Cavs, and the Bucks broke out while Houston, Sacremento, Seattle, and Indiana faded away.
So I say, keep watching the Celtics for what it is worth.
