I think this loss was less about who played and more about a general lethargy on the part of the Celtics. I thought it was obvious halfway through the first quarter that we were going to lose this game and probably lose it big. It wasn't the missed shots as much as the sloppy play - even Jrue! - and being out-hustled on the boards. I think the rebounds were 27-11 in favor of DAL at the half.
No rebounds, no rings. But that's fixable. Count me concerned but not worried. At least not yet.

And by no means do I think X or Brissete has done a bad job we just need Lukes length and paint protection

The Celtics gave very little effort in this one. As I said in the GT one of the few things I have ever agreed with Pat Riley is "no rebounds, no rings." Rebounding takes effort. When they get beat on the boards it's usually because the other team is giving more effort than the Celtics. 52-31 is unexcusable. And, points in the paint 60-26. They just weren't playing hard. Hopefully they got that all out of their systems and will come out hard right from the start in Game 5.
One thing is that the Mavs' role players and young guys came up big for them. They don't usually play as well on the road so hopefully that holds true in this one. And I'm hoping that the crowd will once again get in Kyrie's head. The Celtics need to end it on Monday.

Not necessarily that they didnt want to close out but more like you say just general meh about this one when it became clear Dallas was gonna fight for this win as hard as they could. For me, however, I think we missed a great op. This should be over and leaving the door open for them to steal one in Boston is upsetting. Plus, if Dallas gets one more...I wont even say it.

Im with you completely. This was lackluster. I dont even think the Mavs played amazing either. They didnt win this one, the Cs just lost. I might go so far as to say that the Mavs may have won this game had we played even decent ball but no way it wouldve been a blowout. The blowout happened cuz they wont like 11 straight games, were visibly lagging, and no one stepped up. That combined with no post presence on the D end and even Joe with some rotation gaffs. Turned into a perfect storm for a great mavs team with their backs against the wall. Still, we needed to win this one and we let one slip. If we lose one in Boston, then we will know the Mavs figured something out and maybe we will really need to reset. No way we can lose this tho. Must play championship Celtics Legend basketball. NO EXCUSES!

WTF happened last night? Every players, sans Tatum, was below their average. 15-3 in the playoffs.

As I watched this closely I could see the Mavs gameplan for this game. They focused on Brown with hard D and their mission was to keep him out of the paint and make him shoot. The C's did not pick up on it and forgot about Tatum who was the only one having a good night. The Mavs D was all about Tatum the first 3 games. So what's changed is their shift to Brown who everyone has been blabbing about cooking the mavs. Also the Mavs were playing lockdown paint protection overall which took our driving away and we became spot up shooters who couldn't hit a lake. Really good strategy by the Mavs and we played right into it. This is why we need Kornet if KP is still no go. And put X in for a small lineup and different looks to confuse the Mavs.

I've changed my mind. I don't want X getting any minutes at all over Kornet. I think he killed our momentum in gm 4. He passed up a 3 which gummed up a play after Brown drive and kick to him wide open elbow 3. But swung it to Tatum standing almost at the logo. Who now tries to setup the offense that has broken down at this point. The 5 out offense we rely upon with KP in the lineup is not there if X ain't wanting to take the big shots.

And put X in for a small lineup and different looks to confuse the Mavs. To me this is a minor flaw, or cost, or expectation of living by the three. Every tenth game or so, statistically you're just going to miss all your shots and the other team will hit all theirs. The Miami game was like that. If the Mavs want to crowd the paint again and leave us open to shoot threes all night I'm fine with it. I'm more concerned about why it was so hard to guard Luka and Kyrie when they weren't hitting threes. One reason is because they got the ball to Lively a lot. If I were the Mavs, especially if I see no KP tomorrow night I'm testing the inside as much as possible till they show me they can defend in there. The Celtics clearly want to use their superior athletes to defend Luka and Kyrie on the perimeter and if I were the Mavs I'd say "Nah. Try to cover Lively with your 36 year old and bench guys." The help defense will have to come in there. If I'm the Celtics I'm reasonably ok with that. I'm like "Fine. We'll have Horford and Tatum defend Lively and leave Derrick Jones to hit the threes. If that's how you win then so be it, but we're getting the rebounds and then heading down the other end." If the Mavs plan is for Derrick Jones to outshoot our guys I'm comfortable with that. On offense I want to see Luka guard our guys again. I expect a hell of a grind again, because our guys shooting threes over someone might be harder than D Jones hitting open ones, but in general I'm ok with this. I hope KP can just give us ten effective minutes. We've seen Kornet give ten good minutes and it changes everything
