I had not watched a single highlight video, or read a single scouting report on Juhann Begarin -- so I had no idea what to think when his name was called for our pick.
From what I am able to gather watching his videos, I like what I see.
He's a young guy (turning 19 next month) with a game fairly similar to a 19 year old Jaylen Brown. He relies on his quickness and athleticism, and will need to learn the nuances of the game to take the next step like Jaylen did.
He's got a good foundation to build off of -- meaning he has the tools in the toolbox and just needs to learn how to use them. He can dribble, he can shoot, he can create, he can pass, he can drive, he can play above and below the rim -- but all of it is still unrefined.
I hope Jaylen can take him under his wings and teach young Begarin what he learned to do to become an All-Star player.

I agree. He's definitely got upside, which is hard to find pick in the mid 40s. Kid's got the prototype physical attributes for an NBA SG/SF. If you're gonna play the lottery, you may as well play the powerball.

I haven't had a chance to see any video but I love the pick and the strategy.
Like Yam last year. Last year they know Kemba is banged up. They know Marcus may have hit a ceiling. They know Tremont and Carsen might not be NBA talents. So they hedge with a young guy overseas. Let some other team develop him for a year.
Same thing. Semi is probably done. Romeo is busting. Nesmith has a long way to go. Get this kid.
You can't overdraft 3 and D athleticism in today's nba. It's like having too much size in the Shaq era.

Lots to like. Anyone else think it's a good sign when a young guy asks for [HASH]23?
I think I remember either Brad or Ime saying last summer that he was already capable of playing NBA level D. Add to that court vision, passing ability, confidence in shooting the 3, moving without the ball, finishing ability, and hey, you can easily seeing him being a rotation player pretty soon.

That's the prototypical wing that Brad and Ime covet.
Is there a time compressor machine we can stick Begarin in? We need him to play like a savvy 10 year vet by next season.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZULNxudhFQNot NBA competition, but he's at least looking like he's too good for that league. Physically, he looks ready for the NBA. Skill-wise, he looks polished enough. If the 3 ball is coming along, we might very well have that backup slashing and attacking 3-D wing that we are currently missing.

And he's only 19.
Crossing fingers that he's a future contributor.

I think he has the physical ability to be an elite defender. When you put together NBA level athleticism with a 7' wingspan he could be really good - once he learns our defensive concepts.
On the offensive side, if he does nothing but become a reliable 3 pt shooter, he'd have a spot with us. But I think he could be a lot more with time and work. Still a LONG way to go though.

The scout makes some interesting points. I definitely think the interesting off season development might be can anyone challenge Nesmith and Eminem? I think it will be tough to beat out Pritchard because he comes in cold and still does a decent job. He's really sound. I would think the natural guy to challenge him would be Stauskas. Nesmith strikes me as more vulnerable. I would think Hauser would be the challenger there.
To me, Nesmith, Hauser, Begarin, and Yam all need to go to summer league. Nesmith should be looking to be the Michael Jordan of summer league and Hauser should be looking to be the Reggie Miller of summer league. But there's a chance Begarin or Yam could get in there. I agree Yam and Begarin will probably stay overseas for another year.
I still think drafting those guys has worked out nicely. They're absolutely as good as most college kids outside of the lottery and we don't need them right away.
I wonder if it makes sense to send Stauskas to the summer league. He seems too old for it but I think he could use the work on practicing Celtics defense.
Ultimately I think the replacement for Nesmith will be a trade. Maybe if these guys build value in summer league they can be included in the trade.

And there are some draft prospects late in the 2nd (even undrafted) who I think can do better than Nesmith, if we are looking for a 3-D guy off the bench.
Begarin might turn out to he that guy, but it could take 3 more years to find that out.

I still think Nesmith could turn into a good player. When I watched him today I thought there was a lot to like. And that was without making an outside shot. If and when he rediscovers his shot he'll be a nice piece.
