Ainge has missed on two lotto picks in a row.
Mid firsts should be solidly in the rotation or at least some sort of helpful asset by April of their rookie year. Langford and Nesmith didn't do that.
That's a significant problem.
If both of them had done some version of what Peyton Pritchard is doing we would be in way better shape.
Their career path is reminding me of Gershon Y at this point.
i wonder what's going on there. Like why did Jabari Parker play way more minutes today than Langford and more than Nesmith?
Ainge has just missed on a ton of rookies. (I don't count Jaylen and Tatum in this). Peyton Pritchard is basically the only hit. He's a 7th man type or a 6th.
But Grant Williams? Nope
Semi? Nope
Robert Williams is a yes. Took a long time but got there.
Tremont? Nope
Carsen E? Nope
Tacko....he's good at what he does, but should be happy with a minimum contract for the rest of his life. Kornet is ahead of him.
Kadeem Allen? Nope
Jabari Bird? Nope
Ante Zizic? Nope
Ben Bentil? Nope
Abdel Nader? Nope
Demetrius Jackson? Nope
That's a lot of rookies and picks going back to 2016 and none of them really hit, except R Will and PP, and R Will basically fell to him.
If Ainge has mid or late round draft picks I'd rather see him trade them at this point because it's just not a place where he's getting the team help. Semi is helping, but in all likelihood he's gone now. He's a helping piece, but he's not a winning piece.

That is a huge problem, he should of used those picks to get a decent player, it didn't need to be an all star, but someone who contributes unlike 99% of our bench now. I also think that there are issues in the locker room that nobody is talking about. I think there is resentment from Kemba replacing Gordon as the grossly overpaid guy who seldom plays and when he does, doesn't earn his pay 90% of the time. I also think that Tatum is too full of himself and youth isn't an excuse because yes he is young age wise, he is in his fourth year in the league and has been to two ECF's. I think he has some Allen Iverson in him where he wants to win, but only if he is "the man" and can take credit for it. I hope he grows out of it because he will end up like AI if he doesn't Championship wise. Finally I also think there is an issue with accountability in the locker room. Brad doesn't seem to either be willing or able to hold guys accountable for poor play. The question to answer that needs to be answered is that Brad's fault or Danny's fault? Does Ainge allow Brad to hold guys accountable or is it just Brad is too much of a players coach?
In other words, there are a lot of issues with this team and I don't think they are fixable in the near future.

Please give examples of who should have been drafted instead of Romeo and Nesmith so that we can understand who Ainge missed out on. It's not that I believe that Ainge drafts perfectly, but I looked at the last two drafts and I didn't see any obvious misses.
Other than that, I have my concerns about Tatum too. He's got a lot of talent, but I wonder whether he's more interested in being part of the super-star brotherhood than he is in winning.

Ainge also missed Jokic, but he was drafted in the second round at #41, so every other team missed on him too. As I said, I don't think Ainge drafts perfectly. I just didn't see better picks in 2019 and 2020 than the ones he made.

Just one game, but Nesmith had a very productive night against Charlotte. 15 pts on 50% shooting, 9 rebs, 3 steals, 3 blocks. Let's hope it's a sign of things to come.

I would also say Semi is a bust. Of the the 30 players taken in the 2nd round that year, he's 4th in WAR. Also, 2nd rounders are an absolute crap shoot. if one out of 6-8 2nd rounds can become remotely decent bench players on a good team, you're doing well. I'd say Ainge is better than most GMs when it comes to 2nd round picks. BBD, Semi, Etwan(sp?) Moore, ryan gomes, and Abdel Nader have all had solid NBA careers.
And if you're drafting in 19 and 20 year old in the middle of the draft, odds are they're not gonna be ready to contribute right away. I'm not ready to judge anyone that young until like year 3 or 4. Giannis was a mess at times his rookie year.
IMO the writing on the wall with this team is that they're too young. Teams who's best players are 22 and 24 years old don't win in the NBA. We tried to do a young rebuild while also contending, but it turns out Kyrie is a crazy person. If anything, one can fault Ainge for that (though i can't cuz i was for the move at the time). Kemba's knee went out so he's not what he was early in 2019, so the team's ceiling is definitely lower now. I guess one could argue they should've kept Hayward, but I don't want him making 30+ mill a year as he progresses through his 30s.
This is just the reality of the NBA if you're in a mediocre market and you don't luck into drafting a transcendent talent. None of the elite names are flocking to play here. They want LA, NY, or Miami.
This franchise's fortunes turned when Durant made that last second decision to go GS. By all accounts he was pretty close to coming to Boston. Imagine this team with him for the last four seasons. My god.

I think we're in serious danger of just being the next T Wolves

Nesmith is starting to look like a player. Second game in a row with major contributions.

As he starts getting more playing time, Nesmith looks to me to be one of those players who has a knack for being in the right spot at the right time. He made a number of plays in the big comeback against the Spurs like that. I have not seen that as much from Romeo.

I think we're in serious danger of just being the next T Wolves I think that would be nearly impossible lol, as long as Ainge is in charge. Over the last 30 years the Wolves have the worst record of any team in the major 4 pro sports. They've made it out of the first round once. This is off-topic, but it's wild that the Clippers have existed in some form for over 50 seasons, and they've never made it to the conference finals.

IMO the writing on the wall with this team is that they're too young. Teams who's best players are 22 and 24 years old don't win in the NBA. This 100%. I'm not sure how reliable this data I found was, but it said we're 7th youngest in the league. Those teams younger than us (youngest to oldest)? basketball.realgm.com/nba/transactions/composition_search1. Thunder 2. TWolves 3. Grizzlies 4. Magic 5. Pistons 6. Pelicans Flip it around (oldest teams in NBA): 1. Heat 2. Lakers 3. Clippers 4. Nets 5. Bucks 6. Jazz Not to mention neither Tatum or Brown are top 5 players in the NBA at the moment - which probably also goes back to the age component as they'll continue to improve. I can remember Kobe winning young (paired with Shaq who was a cheat code), Wade winning at 24 (again, paired with Shaq), and Duncan. Other than that, in the "modern" era - most of the top players are winning in their "prime" (27-28 years old for Lebron, Steph, Jordan, KD). I think patience is probably the best option here. Other fan bases probably think we're spoiled to have two top 15 scorers in the NBA under 24. It seems clear the "other" parts of the roster are lacking. We definitely do not have the Poseys or PJ Browns of the world rounding out our playoff rotation to help these young guys. Instead, we have our middle round picks which typically are guys who haven't rounded out their skills and are limited on offense.

I think we're in serious danger of just being the next T Wolves One of the better comparisons I've seen. I'm reminded of the time they had KAT, Wiggins, Butler and Teague..looked great on paper but that was about it. Another comparison is the Trailblazers..Dame and CJ...basically we have that equivalent in Brown and Tatum. Nothing to sneeze at but doesn't exactly make you feel good about your odds of winning a ring. Our bench is OK but our overall team play is lacking an identity. I'm waiting for that true go-to alpha that will hold everyone accountable. Not your lovable friend-to-all Kemba. And certainly not Tatum who thinks he is Kobe but doesn't have Kobe's mentality. Is it in some ways a reflection of Brad Steven's passiveness? He is smart but I wouldn't call him fiery the same way Thibs is. It'll be interesting to see how things play out over the next few seasons.
