If you look at how the NBA is shaping out, Centers no longer need to be 7 feet tall and weigh 250 + lbs. In fact, teams are now putting out guys so short that you’d think it’s a gimmick (HOU is using 6’5” PJ Tucker at the 5 and with success).
What teams are finding out is positioning matters more than size.
That bodes well for Robert and Grant, both who would come up short in the foregone eras. Both Williams are learning the art of positioning. Both have nimble feet and can guard most players in their area.
Grant has higher IQ and body mass to handle bigger players, while Robert is a couple of inches taller, has a greater wingspan, and has exceptional leaping ability (will average more blocked shots than Grant in the same role and with same amount of minutes).
Between the two, who do you think Brad will go with at the starting 5?

R Will if healthy. I'm not at all sold on the idea that somehow height and length are liabilities in this league

I think it'll depend on how hard Robert works. To me he has a higher ceiling than Grant, but maybe not as high a floor. There have been times when Grant looked like a boy among men when near the hoop and his height will always limit him there. If Robert can become an effective shooter from even 15 feet I think he could be really good.

If (and I’m not saying it’s impossible) Robert can understand reading the whole floor on the defensive end, and see plays forming before it happens (like Grant can), RWill will be the defensive anchor of our championship team. With his athleticism and shot blocking ability, adding high level IQ catapults him into DPOY conversation.

IMO RWill's ceiling is DeAndre Jordan and for GWill it is Leon Powe due to his height and build. As it was stated above GWill is more of a guaranteed project than RWill because of his basketball IQ and he doesn't rely nowhere nesr as much on athletic abilities as RWill does.
I hope both hit their ceilings because then that fills our biggest hole in our roster. Getting bemch guys for a contender isn't very hsrd.

I hardly paid any attention to Grant Williams in last year’s draft because I he’s not what you’r consider a gem. But once we drafted him, I began to watch him, and then saw him in action in SL and the regular season, and I can see why Brad praises this kid. He gets it. He knows how to defend, how to be a help defender, knows when and where to fill in, times weakside block shots really well, etc. He’s going to be a plus defender (but won’t block a lot of shots). So unselfish, but can score if he decides to take more ownership on offense.

Robert Williams has turned some heads in these seeding games. Dude has a elite athleticism. I wasn't sold on him right off the bat, but if he can stay healthy we may have our center for the future.

Robert has shot something like 22-26 since play resumed, and while they were mostly dunks, he's also shown a new confidence and ability to hit 10-15 footers. I'm glad to have him back in the three man center rotation with Theis and Kanter. RWill and Smart seem to have a great chemistry and I'd expect to see them on the court together a lot.
I'd like to see what Grant could do with Embiid. If he could do a decent job with him I'd be more willing to imagine him as our future center.

GWil is too under sized. However, I think he makes Semi expendable. RWil has a lot of athletic ability, however watching several games vs. TOR, I realized he does not play alot because he always leaves the 5 open to take shots.

Just imagine if we could combine Theis' positional defensive instincts with RWill's physical abilities and we'd have a future starting center! I have a hard time seeing RWill ever getting really strong on that end (defensive positioning) although his effort/athleticism allows him to make up for it as long as he keeps improving in that department. Any injury could really derail that ceiling (and he does seem injury prone).
I think GWill has a future here especially with the flexibility of him being the center for small ball. His defensive instincts are strong and that's hard to teach and is what RWill is missing. I think Brad will value that going forward more. His offense will hopefully come with more familiarity and confidence.

I think both guys are going to take a big step next year.
GWill is shooting 67% on 3's this post-season (8-12). Amazing considering he started 0-25 as a pro. Whatever position he plays, if he can shoot even 40% and play good D, he'll be valuable.
I think RWill's next big step is a 10-15 foot jumper. He's still not even looking to score when he gets the ball in the lane unless he has a dunk or layup, but he's shown nice touch on some 10 foot "set shots" where he doesn't even jump, so I think he'll be able to develop that shot. With his hops he should be able to shoot over anyone.
